Or whatever that DIY store was called? I mean, he's obviously highly skilled and highly intelligent. I get that he may have wanted to put his old life behind him and all that but there are so many other things he could have done (and get paid more than close to minimum wage)
Infact, I kinda found it pretentious and hypocritical that he kept telling people they could be so much more than they could be when he himself was doing a job a 17yr old kid could do.

.. Or did I miss something?

Where should he be working instead? And people who work at such places make more than minimum wage.

He wasn't advising people to try to get rich or rise in 'station'. He was encouraging them to pursue their goals. For him, this job is ideal. There's nothing wrong with having ambitions that don't involve lots of money. Being content with your life is worthwhile, and perfectly possible without a lot of material crap.

A concept that appears to be almost lost, unfortunately. Being satisfied with what you have seems not to have been in vogue for some time.

I have quite a skilled profession in an engineering field, but I also spend a lot of time doing absolutely base level process work in a volunteering role. I really enjoy the simplicity of it and I find it quite meditative and fun. Good people around you and the challenge of refining and bettering every simple process is enjoyable and I never get bored with it at all.
