The series from the 80's starred Edward Woodward as a retired CIA type who served people to help them get out of trouble. Stalkers, kidnappers and things that were out of the range of the police were his specialty.
McCall was an English gentlemen. Always well dressed, drove his Jaguar and had a network of people that he would call on to help get things done.
The show always showed an ad in the newspaper (which is what is seen on his laptop at the end of the movie) In some fashion the movie is almost a prequel to the TV show setting as McCall was already involved in this work.
There were no indications in the show that McCall was OCD and he sure didn't fight like the movie but the show was very popular for several years.
I grew up watching that show, but I had forgotten about the ad in the newspaper.
I just threw up a little in my mouth.
they never once say he is former CIA they always refer to the government organization he worked for as the Agency or the company even though those are nicknames for the CIA it is just as likely that he simply worked for an unknown agency

Did this movie make enough that anyone would bother with a sequel? I mean, I liked the movie, but it really didn't jump out as the start of a franchise. I've seen the TV show and I stopped watching after a couple of seasons since they just repeated the same plots over and over. I can't see that a series of movies can avoid that either.

Well, because sequels to moderately performing movies rarely make much money. People who didn't see the first won't watch the second and people who watched the first but didn't like it won't watch either. It just starts off with two strikes against it.

This makes me wonder why a there was a second 'Jack Reacher' film (which I enjoyed, but not as much as the first...)
shareyes it in fact did make enough money. it had a budget of 55 million and made 192,300,000 thats over 3 times the budget
