Surely if the Mandrakises are as rich as it appears, why do the kids share a bedroom? I've noticed this with a lot of American movies - the kids seem to share a bedroom in most of them. This isn't a criticism, I just thought it was a bit odd...
There are many kids who like to share a room when they are young. Lots don't like sleeping in rooms by themselves. So it is not a matter of wealth but of companionship.
I grew up in a 5 bedroom house and shared a bedroom with my little brother until i was about 7 or 8. it was just us and my parents. So we had room for me and my own room, but i chose to sleep in the same room. The other poster is right, kids dont like sleeping alone. "YOU.GOT.FOOD.IN.MY.HAIR" ~ Rosalie BD
I shared with my sister even though there was another bedroom until halfway through the 9th grade. At that point we were kind of sick of each other... but yeah, lots of kids share bedrooms, especially when they're younger so they won't be scared.
For centuries it was normal for the whole family to sleep in the same room. Yes, it was because the houses were small and the yarns were big, and space for cattle was more important than space for humans. But this was the way to keep the family ties, to stay close to each other, to have feelings, compassion, be ready to help.
But all this seems to be unwanted in modern world. People should abandon these emotions, families should be destroyed, and if people would have a feeling of security that these firm bonds can give them you couldn't make them scared, paranoid, afraid of everything from terrorists to germs, from human touch to animals or plants.
So, it is best to keep modern kids separated, each of them has to be under camera surveillance in his/her own room, and it would be best if he/she never really leaves it. After all, kids have Facebook, cellulars, e-mail and all those other communication possibilities, so why would they have to see their siblings, or parents, let alone other humans at all? This would make them perfectly secure from violence, emotions, infections, abuse, love and all other unwanted dangers. And perfectly secure from sanity as well.
Ok Political Polly get off the soapbox. Incest was much more common back then because relatives lived in such close quarters. Was that strengthening the family unit as well?
When you share a room with at least half a dozen people it is not very likely that you'll try to commit incest. You'd probably be discovered the first time by someone who would wake up in the right (or wrong) moment. It's much easier today to enter a room inhabited by a single child, with no witnesses... and repeat it night after night...
They would NOT be sharing a bedroom in reality. They both would have a huge play area just for their own, with a huge room loaded with Game Boys, toys, etc.
This was just to keep the kids together in the movie....
It is odd that a wealthy family in a huge estate has kids sharing a bedroom. What makes it even more odd is that there is a boy and a girl . Very strange.
