How did the stranger select his victims? And why?

How did he know Jill would be baby sitting at that house? Also, what do you think was the strangers motive? Was it just because he got thrills out of breaking into places to terrorize the homes occupants? I just have troubles making sense of why someone would go through so much trouble for those reasons alone. But of course it made for a suspenseful movie plot.

Dude was cray cray. He just wanted to rip people to pieces with his bare hands. Perhaps he was following Jill before she got the babysitting gig. Maybe he had no motive. And yes possibly he got his jollies from stalking and threatening. He was bored? He had no job? Or family? The stranger could very well have been a drifter going from town to town murdering innocent people then moving on.
