If the planes were covered with cloth and wood, why not take a swing at that with the shovel, instead of (trying) amputating a limb.
This is a very good point.
The trailing edge of a Nieuport wing was only a couple of layers of streched fabric between a wooden spars at the point where the hand appears to be trapped.
It would be fairly easy to cut this away using an entrenching tool or more likely a bayonet rather than severing the hand and would avoid whoever is doing it standing up and drawing fire!
I think I would have believed this scene a bit better if he`d actually got trapped inside the cockpit of the plane and it was his leg that was the problem.
Getting his hand caught that way was just stupid.
