does the ending kill anyone else?

We watched this is my AP World History class, and we just finished it today.
I loved the movie and thought it was really amazing, compared to the other garbage we're forced to watch in school.

However the ending killed me. I loved the entire thing and then the last ten seconds it has to show the slide about how he looked for her in Paris but never found her. What kind of crap was that?! haha. It just made me really upset.

reply

He had no way of contacting her. He didn't know when she'd be in Paris or for how long. Going out there on whim and not finding her, though sad, is believable. I was a bit upset myself for a few moments after watching the film but I understood why it ended the way it did. Finding one person in Paris is like finding a needle in a stack of needles.

reply

WTF, THEY COULD HAVE AT LEAST LIED TO US. Just fing tell us that they found each other and live happily ever after. Instead of that split second, why can't they just replace it with another split second telling us that they just found each other?! I can't sleep.

you know you love me,
gossip girl

reply

Well... they DID lie to us. Neither of those people existed, all the characters in the film were composites loosely based on real individuals. Literally NOTHING shown in this film was true.

The real question is, what kind of irresponsible teacher would show this kind of garbage in a history class??

Thank you - my thoughts exactly. Of all the things any history teacher (all the more an AP teacher) might do to instruct students on World War I! Showing them a silly film like this is such a dereliction of duty it is hard to believe. Is it any wonder that we are simply becoming a nation of totally uneducated dupes, many of whom apparently honestly hold the conviction that the solution to our problems is to elect as President another uninformed, unintelligent, uneducated bozo like Sarah Palin.

How did your teacher explain World War II to you? By showing Inglorious Bestards?

reply

Re: "many of whom apparently honestly hold the conviction that the solution to our problems is to elect as President another uninformed, unintelligent, uneducated bozo like Sarah Palin."

She'd be a godsend compared to Nobama!

reply

It's OK to not like the president. But you say stupid crap like this and you look like an absolute moron.

No wonder the GOP is such a laughing stock. I just wish you weren't dragging the rest of us down with you just because you can't admit you were wrong on nearly everything.

Thanks for backing up your statements with facts. I meant what I said: Palin would make a much better president than Nobama. Easy.

But if you're a non-thinking Nobamabot, what do I care?

And, by the way, I'm not Republican; you need to quit arrogantly presuming things about people.

I'm sorry I hurt your feelings by presuming you were a Republican. You're right. It was a very mean thing to say.

I'm also sorry I hurt your feelings by saying bad things about Sarah Palin. I will try to be more politically correct next time.

Also, your "Nobama" nickname is very clever. Keep using it so everyone will know how clever you are.

Who said anything about your hurting my feelings? I said it was arrogant to presume things about people, like their political affiliation.

Also, you didn't directly say anything bad about Palin and, even if you did, what's that to me? As for your not being "politically correct," that's actually great; the less politically correct the better.

Also, your "Nobama" nickname is very clever. Keep using it so everyone will know how clever you are.

It's not clever, it's the sad truth.

The sad truth is that his name is Nobama?

Anyway, I'm glad you're not upset. The way you obsess over anybody badmouthing Half-governor Palin made me think you were upset.

Janet! Donkeys!

reply

I wasn't obsessing over anything so I don't know what you're talking about. As an obvious left-leaning individual you support politicians like Pelosi (rolling my eyes), so you have little room to criticize people who approve of Palin.

Say what you will about Palin, but if she were president she wouldn't have taken troops prematurely out of Iraq, paving the way for the mess going on now, all for sake of being politically correct rather than doing what's right for the situation. She also wouldn't have messed up healthcare with the so-called Affordable Care Act. She also wouldn't pile-up scandal upon scandal, including the IRS scandal where, gee, they lost the emails and Lerner pleads the fifth. Why plead the fifth when there's not a "smidgen" of corruption?

Standing up for such corrupt liars is absurd.

The above comments about Ms. Palin shouldn't be interpreted to mean that I support her in the presidency because I don't; she's not qualified, but neither was Nobama. His shameful non-record speaks for itself. He's a likable guy and can give and impressive speech; too bad he can't back up his words.

Earlier, you implied it was bad to make arrogant presumptions.

What happened to that? Did it become inconvenient?

I guess I just don't understand politics.

*looks around*

You mean we BECAME a nation of totally uneducated dupes since we did exactly what you said, except you picked the wrong person to complain about. But you are literally such and uneducated dupe years later you still don't realize what you did to yourself. You're like the sucker who fall for a scam artist's scheme, he takes half your money. And after you lost half of it, you let him scam you out of the other half using the exact same scam under the premise, "it'll be different this time'.

reply

You obviously are not a teacher. A student got on this site to express interest in in history and you go on a rant about how terrible the teacher is? News to you... Most school terms for high school last 180 days. I think it is perfectly fine to show a movie that is entertaining AND follow it by discussing what was accurate or inaccurate. All I can say is I hope you all home school your children. Since teachers are compared to "uneducated dupes like Sarah Palin".

reply

If you did not like the film, that is one thing, but this film was not garbage. It was quite entertaining.

This

reply

A good history teacher. The film certainly took many liberties, but the story rang true, and could spark curiosity in his or her students.

reply

if i was him, and if i was still madly in luv with the girl, i could've tried returning to that small village. there could be a chance where she and her niece + nephews return there after the war, yes?

it might not be right away, but after a year or 2, she could've come back

reply

Depends whether or not the village was still there. A fair number of villages located close to or in the middle of the front lines during WWI were wiped off the face of the map during the war and were never rebuilt afterwards.

"Any plan that involves loosing your hat is a BAD plan."

reply

You are correct about him going back to where her village was to possibly track her down. What in all reality what he should have done was gotten her last name to be able to track her down better that way.

The scene when everyone's rushing out of the hospital, I KNEW they should've done something like HEY LET'S MEET AT THE EIFFEL TOWER ON THE 4TH OF SEPTEMBER K? K. Gahh.

reply

Or the top of the Empire State Building on Christmas Day?

reply

He had no way of contacting her.

When they were saying goodbye to each other, i was thinking he should have proposed to her to make a pact that he would have written on a piece of paper in advance and that she could have translated later, given they don't understand each other. Something along the lines of "As soon as the war is over, i'm gonna be at this exact place every Sunday at noon or every first Saturday of the month for say, 2 years. If you want to see me, come there." Or "Here's the address of a good friend/family member, if you ever want to see me, write there" or something like that. Either end could have come up with such a simple thing to precisely avoid what happened at the end!

I mean, common, there's no way i would accept the possibility that after all that i could never see her again. No way. If there was really something even remotely similar to feelings between me and her, i would never let that happen.

I agree with OP, i was also shocked to read that at the end and i also thought it's kind of a down note to end the movie with, but wachu gon do. It's not like the movie was a masterpiece anyway. Something was cruelly lacking in it but i couldn't quite put my finger on it.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

He had no relatives back home though. He didn't even name anyone as next of kin to send his death notice to if he got shot down.

reply

yeah.. that was sad. but I was disappointed with the climax fight. It's crappy and unrealistic.

reply

They should have had the Black Falcon about to finish off Rawlings when bam-bam-bam-bam... the shell shock dude lights up his little black joke of a plane.

reply

Maybe he should have looked her up on facebook.

reply

That's how it is in real life stupid, they didn't have anyway of contacting each others. And the movie director isn't going to change the script just to make some drama queen feel happy as if it was a fairy tale.

What? Did you expect James Franco to go knocking door to door hoping to find her in the population of about millions?

i personally thought it was an amazing way to round off the movie no matter how emotional it was.

it just shows that all filmmakers aren't going out to make hollywood and the critics happy but more just want to make a realistic emotional movie i think it is very good indeed.

now quick change of subject.

sorry for being morbid

really sorry

but did anyone else grin like idiots or even laugh when the black falcon got killed?

i sure did.

reply

Couldn't he have just Googled her? I mean in this film anything's possible!!!

reply

When the Black Falcon got his, I was like.... Surprise, MFer!!!! Eat French dirt.

reply

I saw this movie yesterday, and have to wonder if he didn't go to England as well to search for her. Didn't she go there first?

reply

I have mixed feelings about the ending. I like the fact they didn't make a happy end out of that romance. But the fact that they never met again is highly unrealistic. HE had no way of contacting her, OK. What about her? She knew his name, the name of his escadrille, where he was stationed. She could have written to say where she was, and then he could have written back. That really bothered me.

I'm a Sidekick and proud of it.

reply

I know. I thought it was really sad. I thought it was going to be a good ending then it just ended up being so sad. I felt so bad for James Franco because he was in love with her and saved her life and then never got to see her again. I mean its sad because it had to of broken his heart.

reply

I'll steer clear of this movie because of the ending alone, I'm a 'happy ending' kinda guy as my life doesent have one(genetic thing).

I do have one argument against all the ppl cheering for the bad ending saying it was impossible to meet up again.

On two separate occasions over 40 years two of my aunts has met in paris - completely at random. This was way before cellphones or emails. Neither knew the other was there, they lived in separate countries and had little contact. They were there for the same reason though - a large peace demonstration.

I have little doubt two people who truly wanted to find eachother could manage it when they even know in what city to look.

reply

I was like "aww how sad"

I wish I could watch it in my history class- I woud refer it to my teacher, but for some reason he hates me. I have like one of the highest grades in there but he treats me like crap soo idk...

i agree dude i would like to steer clear but i cant lol its so good and the ending makes me so sad and same thing 4 me as u bro tho entire thing, and he coulda went to england, they took names of refugees so he coulda got last name and went to her uncles and stayed there, but *beep* dude it was upsetting

reply

Well you have to remember tracking or finding a person at that time made it very hard and difficult to do that compared to todays times when you can hire an investigator, search online here and track the person down that way.

Yes it was sad but I am sure that was not the only story that this has occured to in real life.

I watched this in my history class too, and i found it funny that when it was over all the girls in class were whining about how they never met again, but all the guys - including myself - were just focusing on the badass way he killed the black falcon.

reply

COOL That you watched this in your history class. Well that is just a part of life you know. Things happen for a reason and it possibly was not meant for that fighter pilot and the French woman to be together. I loved the air fights though and it was very exciting to watch.

One thing I'm surprized no one's mentioned yet, right after the war came the Spanish Influenza which in just one year killed roughly as many people as how many died in the war. And of course like all plagues it made no distinction between soldiers and civilians, it simply killed anyone it infected. It's entirely possible the girl may have been amoung the millions killed by the Influenza.

reply

You are possibly correct that it could have killed the French girl that he loved off and that is why he could not find her. It is a shame that he did not know her last name to be able to track her that way. It would have helped out to find someone that you are looking for.

Did it occur to anyone criticizing the fact that they never found each other in Paris was because she didn't survive the war?

Maybe she was killed during the evacuation. Maybe the ship to England that she was on was torpedoed. Or, like millions of people world wide, she died during the 1918 Spanish Infuenza outbreak. This was still a time when cholera, smallpox, even a nasty infection could kill you. There was no such thing as penicillin or other antibiotics yet.

Or maybe, she met a nice English lad, they fell in love, and lived happily ever after in London.

reply

You bring up some very good points about her possibly dying due to the diseases of that time. Yes the German U-boats were torpedoing a lot of ships during World War I. and World War II.. That might have happened all right.

Yes she could have met someone from England and gotten married. That is very common and happens all of the time including today. I have seen where friends of mine planning our high school reunion and trying to track down people. Some ladies do not use their maiden names which makes it hard to track them down. So you bring up some very good points about it.
