Why not use real planes

I`m afraid that the CGI practically killed off the film for me with planes whizzing about the screen doing the most unimaginable stunts-sure the Red Baron would have been hard-pressed to keep up with all this. Can you do a handbrake turn in a Fokker?Well you can now!Speaking of the Baron:why are all the German planes red Tri-Fokkers?Looks a bit silly really.Great shame as "Flyboys" has some good moments but most of them take place on the ground.

To a certain extent they did hence all the use of a BRITISH Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter for some scenes where they needed a two seater when a French one would have been more plausable.
A lot of the CGI work DID look somewhat unconvincing though.

Handbrake turn in a Fokker, LOL. A perfect description! The dogfights were horribly unrealistic.

Well, Howard Hughes made Hell's Angels but a dozen years after that war, and still couldn't get all the right airplanes. The dogfights are very realistic, but still not perfect. The movie lost money. And a few stunt people died making it. If you were to announce you were going to try that today, the insurance company would probably charge you a billion just to cover your liability. And you would have to have every airplane built by hand.

Even so, it is a shame the producers obviously didn't even try to make it realistic...
