Disgusting and Depressing. My second worst movie EVER!

There is no suspense, no proper build up like in the original...

You want to know what is in this one? Awful acting, cheap killing clichés, dumb characters, over the top screams and directing...

I get the "eye-gouging" relates to a greek tragedy but CHRIST, There are SO many eye-gouges in this it gives me a headache to watch. One scene of eye-gouging was enough. But I think the director of this has a sick fetish for it.

And then the killer kills his sick mother and eats her...

This film could've been good but no, they decided to make it a cheap, gross slasher pick with dumb characters and acting.

Personally, I think the director of this needs help.

the original also had bad acting. it also had dumb characters. the direction was nothing to write home about.

the original is literally a cheap slasher flick with dumb characters and bad acting.

I don't get it, you are describing both the new one and the original

bad boys for life

reply

ING!! Wrong!!!!

The original, though a slasher flick had build up and suspense. Case in point, we never see the killer, only their POV.

There is also dark atmosphere and a sense of claustrophobia. A fear of the unknown.

In the remake we know exactly who the killer or killers are, it's just done so sloppy and the filmmakers obviously think that by drowning it in gore will somehow compensate for it. B.S.!!

You need to watch both films again and pay close attention, if can stomach the gore in the remake.

reply

what the hell does that have to do with the bad acting cheap killing clichés, dumb characters, over the top screams and directing...

both movies have THE SAME OF THOSE PROBLEMS!.... you are just hating for the sake of hating, simple as that

reply

Yeah the original was never known to be a well made film I don't think. People only started thinking of it that way right before this came out, I guess because anything that gets a remake must be classic.

The original is just another slasher film as well, it was never supposed to be anything more...

reply

It had a cult following before the remake, but it's pretty much due to an article that ran in Fangoria in the '90s. No one really knew about the original up until that point.

reply

the orginal black christmas was not just a slasher film. slasher films did not exist yet.

plus, it was far more than "just" anything. it was--according to Nowell's Blood Money: A History of the First Teen Slasher Film Cycle--basically the Canadian film industries best hope of actual financial success after the Canadian Film Development Corporation was founded in '68 and that attempt to have an "internationally recognized film industry" was failing

it was just another slasher like F13 and Halloween

What are you talking about? It generated cult following in VHS era around '90s. It just got new audiences when it's remake was announced, because people were interested in seeing the original first (or they watched original after they've seen remake).

The original is just another slasher film as well, it was never supposed to be anything more...

Again, what the hell are you talking about? How could it be "just another slasher movie" when slasher subgenre wasn't even invented back then? We are talking about '74, it's just about 6 years before first "definite" slasher movie aka Friday the 13th that started the whole craze. It was not Halloween in fact that started the whole genre, it was Friday the 13th.

It was the first movie to use subjective view camera (POV) as POV of a killer. Not Halloween. You still don't get it's importance? It was the first to use "killer is calling from the house" plot point. You still don't get the importance? No? Not at all?

Again, you are wrong.

The original film has a much higher rating on rottentomatoes, an even above average approval.

The original had simple characters who we could care about if something happened to them. The killer was unknown which gave us the ability to make him up in our minds as to where he/she came from and what their motives were. The ending was also ambiguous leaving us with the desire to want know more.

This remake is a jump back from what could've been done. The first big mistake is that we get to know the killer, or killers as I should say and their backstory leaves a lot to be desired or sympathetic.

Why did they have two killer? Why did one of them have to have a jaundice, so he could look freaky? Why did the mother have murder the boy's father? Why did the mother have to rape her son? Why did he have to kill her and cut her up and eat her? Why did Agnes grow up become a large hulking freak...?

You see what I mean? So many unanswered question to very poor back story. It just doesn't hold water.

This truly could've been done better and instead of exploring possibilities the write took the low road and just said "Let's make it very sick and twisted."

Yes, the plot sucks, I agree. Not a good movie because the writing is so poor, as you detail. The acting isn't bad out of some of the cast though, Chabert, Trachtenberg and Martin certainly qualified as decent.

we know the ship sunk in Titanic but it didn't wreck the movie. we know exactly what happens yet its still great

reply

this movie is different and better than the original

Fully agree!
