the second half turned into a conventional, Hollywood thriller. Such a shame because this is such an underrated movie but the ending really hurts its.

I agree! I enjoyed the first 30 minutes or so immensely ... the moment they finished watching the tapes is when I feel it fell apart - which is unfortunate! the set-up was highly entertaining
