So, the Luke Wilson character is watching people get brutally killed on the VHS tape and he's literally watching and watching and watching and then sees the cameras filming the room and then he continues watching and his wife joins him and they keep watching and watching and then put in another movie (just to make sure of course) and then they keep watching and watching. Do you see where I'm going with this? My first instinct as soon as I put 2 and 2 together is to tell my wife to get up and let's get out of here RIGHT NOW!!!! Of course that didn't happen though. This frustrated/bothered me to no end.
They were trapped. In the middle of nowhere, with no transportation and the killers left the tapes there on purpose knowing they would figure it out. Completely rational thinking to hold up in the room and Luke Wilson's character was great in this.
I liked the movie and thought it was well done, but my only issue was with the elaborate tunnel system. Surely there is an easier way to enter the rooms other than digging tunnels.
If you came across a video tape like that, in a hotel in the middle of nowhere, your initial impression would not be: Okay, let's go. You'd watch it, process it and then understand the severity of the situation. These characters haven't been in a situation like that so they most likely don't have a frame of reference to follow. You as spectator have "God's view," you're seeing it with scary music and an ominous tone. You know the characters are in danger. They don't. No one that goes to a hotel thinks: Oh, this is a hotel of horrors.
The hotel manager wanted them to find those tapes. He wanted them to go in that suite. They were trapped.

This is just about the best response to this general type of post that I have ever seen. You are 100% correct.
I have to say that it's possible that I would have left as soon as I saw how nasty the room was--in fact, that did happen to me once. I walked into a motel room and it was borderline scary so we left within five minutes. That being said, I do not believe that we would have been murdered no matter how gross it was. I think it was a motel that people dealt serious drugs in on a regular basis which is why it came off as being so scary--the scary feeling I had was legit but not in a crazy murderer kind of way.
However, I still agree with your post as far as their reactions and decisions once they start watching the tapes.
