There was a hint at it in the 'ham eating scene' but I saw no confirmation in the movie. Anyone catch anything that I missed? Or was there anything about it in the book?

I'm pretty sure he was Jewish.
His name - Jacob Geismer - sounds Jewish and his disappointment in Lena betraying 12 Jews for her survival confirmed that for me. I even think somewhere it was mentioned that he was a Jew.
