Cate actually disappoints

I don't think this one of Cate's better performances. She was really overdoing the Marlene Dietrich persona. What was with the black hair and black contact lenses? I couldn't see why this woman had all these men after her. There was just something lacking. (And I think she's a fantastic actress).

IT was an overdone performance..not one of her best.

Agreed. She was supposed to be so seductive that she could get men to murder for her, but I just never saw it. Her character was supposed to be so self-centered and evil that she would betray her own people, but somehow Cate's performance just came out as bland. At the start of the movie we are supposed to build up some sympathy for her as a femme fatale so that this revelation at the end would shock us, but Cate just does not pull it off.

I enjoyed her performance.

I think she's the best thing in this. Watch the old films this is based on, that's how they acted. Its almost that she's acting an actress acting a part, very accomplished. The weaknesses are in the plot exposition and the script.

reply

I think they were trying to make "retro" movie, black and white, primitive lighting, like they were making them 60 years ago. So she played what she was given and played well. It was Clooney who didn't fit into the "retro" style, he looks modern.

reply

I thought they did that so it would blend in w/ the archival footage.

reply

So men can't be drawn in by darker looks? Ridiculous.
