Something I don't get...spoilers

First I don't understand what happened to the guy on Christopher Columbus' ship when his skin and bones get sucked into the triangle. How come just that guy and not everyone else. Then...what about the nine sailors on the ship when the scientists learn about their mission. There were pictures of their shredded bodies on deck but why those nine men?

Maybe he was the one closest to the rip in the Triangle and only he passed through??

Its pretty confusing though i agree! All adds to the suspense.
