Sofia. The Press Office of the Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov was authorized to announce that the President considers the use of the Bulgarian national anthem as a background music of Nazi scenes in an U.S. movie, distributed in Bulgaria as inadmissible. As a Bulgarian and President of the Republic of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov expresses his deepest indignation with desecrating one of the National symbols of Bulgaria – a country with history one thousand and three hundred years old – a country which has made a priceless contribution to the culture treasury of the World. The Bulgarian Penal Code incriminates in its article 108, par. 2 actions, which lead to desecration of the Coat of Arms, the flag and the anthem of the Republic of Bulgaria and envisages penalties. The Bulgarian president expresses certainty that the Prosecutor’s Office in Bulgaria will take the necessary legal actions and the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior will initiate actions to clear out the case.
Maybe Bulgaria should focus more on improving its economy and stopping the emergence of sex slaves in the region rather than focusing on this dumb movie.
Yeah, everyone needs to lighten up. It was an alternate reality. It was science fiction. Even in the movie, it never "really happened." It was just one of a billion potential alternate realities in history. Who cares?
Again, people need to lighten up.
P.S. Bulgarians noticed their national anthem. Did anyone else? Nope... I would have never known about it until I read it here.
Congratulations! You made an issue out of something that 99% of the world would have never recognized if you hadn't brought it up!
Yo of course it is important, you ****... You all discriminate us, not to mention sports, poor Bulgarians, well whatever, right. Imagine it was the "God save the queen" it would become a cathastrophy.
I am sorry about the spelling, I am Bulgarian, my IQ is 140, but I belong to a lower-race nation.
i'm really curious.. who discriminates you? at what? you poor bulgarians... you can't even cross your country without beeing mugged by rakets or policemen, and yet you complain out-loud how the rest of the world discriminates you. ha! congrats on your IQ. maybe you should use it to learn foreign languages. who says you are lower race? really.. do you need attention? thank me for this post then. cheers!..
Tell me, dragosRO, if someone comes at you and spits right in your eye, will you let it go? Because this is just what it is, be it even a dumb Hollywood movie. I do not need attention and I generally laugh when they make fun of my or any other country. We shouldn't take ourselves seriously, right.
The reason why it pisses Bulgarians off is probably not known to you, so let me englighten you. During World War II Bulgaria saved most, if not all of its Jews, something that was unthinkable then and I have to say I am proud of my ancestors for that. It entered the war on Germany's side so it would not get hit by the hammer, as it was just ending another war with the neighbors and wasn't in a condition to fight. Despite that fact, the country never attacked anyone and as I said, Hitler never touched the Jews living in Bulgaria, or those who fled here. Now do you understand the association of the Bulgarian anthem as a background music for a Nazi? Or am I just wasting my time?
But enough with history. Here's the second reason and it's pretty simple to understand, though you seem to have missed it. Yes, it is a fictional story. Yes, it is just for entertainment purposes and to make money. However, I don't care if my country has problems. There are reasons for that that go back hundreds of years back and I have neither the time nor the desire to explain it to you, though I am sure you are not burning with desire to hear it as well, right :). I don't care if the world knows, doesn't know, cares, doesn't care or what have you about Bulgaria. You cannot degrade the most official sign of a nation and a country (and moreover in the way stated above). It's called simple respect and it has nothing to do with harmless fun when nations and countries are made fun of in Hollywood films.
Manol
P.S. Cross the country without getting mugged? I can see you have absolutely no idea of the contributions Bulgaria has made to the world. Take for example the calendar most of the world uses today. Yes, it was made by Bulgarians. A Bulgarian made the first electronic computer elements. The list goes on and on. And no, I don't want a medal for what my ancestors have done, but I do not need to have it spit on by people who cannot see further than their noses. Neither do I want attention. What I want is for people like the ones who made the film to stop spiting in my eye. Imagine this - A film that makes fun of the firefighters who were saving victims on September 11th. How funny do you consider that to be?
P.S.S. I am sure I have wasted yours and my time, but at least I got it off my chest :D.
And by the way, yes, we are trying to get rid of all the mafia elements here. If it were up to me personally....I'd have one night and at the dawn of the next day, they'd all be in jail for the rest of their petty lives (or shot, for the ones who resisted arrest ;)).
Manol, I understand that you're Bulgarian and I want to tell you, first of all, that I agree with you in regards to the Bulgarian anthem issue. I respect that, I respect you as a Bulgarian and Bulgaria as a country, 'cos I lived four years there and I know how the things are. I understand your points from the board, but I want to tell you that apart from the anthem thingie, everything that you take for granted as national history of your country is not quite really the truth. For example: 1. Everybody here sez that Bulgaria has 1300 years of history as a country...This is NOT true! You know why? Because Bulgaria is on her own as a country after 1878, with the treatise signed at San stefano between Turkey, England (and some other countries) and Russia. It's true that Bulgarians were here, but the country as an independent one exists from the 3rd of March 1878 - there's no question about it. 2. You're saying that it was a Bulgarian who invented the first personal computer - His name was John Atanasov, he was Bulgarian by line of birth but he was born in America and thereby American citizen. Not to mention that he knew nothing in Bulgarian. And by the way, the first personal computer was developed by Texas Instruments, not Johnnie. ;) And looong before that, the Sumeriens ;) 3. Calendar?! Does the name Gregorian sounds familiar? Do some research, please! 4. As for crossing the country - you're right, I've been there a long time and it's not like that - rakets and stuff, well maybe the police but hey, they caught me in a city doing 90km/h and they showed mercy so this is a white ball for them! 5. ALL Bulgarians think that the Republic of Macedonia should be a part of Bulgaria, because Macedonia IS Bulgaria. This is not true, Macedonia has been occupied long before Bulgarian nomad tribes arrived in the Thracian area. And this is not all...I've seen people in Bg wearing t-shirts on which Bulgaria is depicted as a country with 3 different sea-openings, with most of now-a-days Romania in its posession, a great deal of Greece as well and, of cource, Macedonia. As a historical fact, it was King Simeon the Great who managed to unite all the Bulgarian tribes in order to achieve a better defense and control and this was for a short period only, but to say that Bulgaria SHOULD take control of the upper mentioned territories is first of all stupid, second impossible and third, irrational.
There are some "myths" implemented into Bulgarian minds by means of propaganda and a part of this country's history which is revealling only the aspects that suits it well - in my oppinion the mentality won't change until these aspects will be taken apart and people will concentrate on the future, rather than the past.
I hope I haven't offended you in any way with what I mentioned here. This is stated as my own and personal opinion only and should be considered only a point of view and a reason for thinking.
P.S. I'm not Macedonian or Turkish - I'm Romanian.
What you write in your points 1 & 5 is pointblank *beep* my boy.
1. It's a well known historical fact that Bulgarian state formed in the 6th-7th century. 5. It's also a well known fact that Bulgaria was the first one to recognize the Republic of Macedonia as an independet state.
"What you write in your points 1 & 5 is pointblank *beep* my boy" - as I mentioned in my post, this is only my opinion, based on what I've seen while in Bulgaria. So, would you mind stop patronizing me and also the "my boy" stuff - maybe you should cut some crap, dude.
1. "It's a well known historical fact that Bulgarian state formed in the 6th-7th century" - Seriously?!Is it that historical fact one on which you can bet your life on? I don't think so, because you weren't there when that happen, right? So you cannot possibly know whether this is the truth or some deviation in the course of history. As far as I'm concerned, Bulgarian "ancestors" and founders of this country (not STATE, mind you...) are nomadic tribes coming from the Volga river region, thus Bulgarian name origin. Nobody knows for sure how many they were, but they came in waves, ok, and this is why the surrounding countries have a rich linguistic legacy from them. But the Bulgarian state was NOT founded in 681 and if you believe that it was founded then, YOU should grow up. 2. "It's also a well known fact that Bulgaria was the first one to recognize the Republic of Macedonia as an independet state" - To tell you the truth, I don't give a penny about the political sack of crap, therefore the fact that Bulgaria was the first country to acknowledge the independency of the Republic of Macedonia is irrelevant and pointless to me. I am talking about public opinion, and if you start saying that Bulgaria is the first country that did this and that for the first time in the world, then you're either Bulgarian or thinking like one. The thing is (as I noticed it from one end of Bulgaria to another) that EVERYBODY believes that Macedonia is actually Bulgarian land. Do you have some comments about this one? Well, if you're Bulgarian you'll probably have and I know what it'll be like but I tell you what! I don't like the fact that Bulgarians are constantly monitoring the neighbor countries and immitating almost everything around, on the principle that the neighbor's grass is greener. I also don't like the fact that most Bulgarian are thinking about stuff like the upper mentioned instead of minding their own business and take care of the land that they have, and make it a prosperous one! Don't you think that this is much better? Think about it, and if you come with an even better idea, post it.
It's an obvious fact that you are just a poinless chatterbox, your arguments being the ones heard at the pubs, and I don't find it worthy to enter into any further discussion with you.
Hey, by the way, when I hear "Bulgaria" I remember their neighbors, Turkey... therefore... "Midnight Express"... oh, lovely memories of a lovely people......
@sorinakis81 I'm willing to agree with all your points exept 1 & 5, I'm not going to argue about 5, but about 1: "In the late 7th century a branch of the Bulgars led by Khan Asparuh migrated into the northern Balkans, where they merged with the local Slavic population and possibly remnants of the Thracian population to form the first Bulgarian state in AD 681." Care to argue with Wikipedia?
Bulgaia can go smell itself. I feel so sad we used your silly anthem in a movie. I think one of your cousins works with my Polish maid and cleans the toilets in my house. That's all Bulgarians are good for.... cleaning American toilets.
What a nice looooong and full of *beep* letter you've got here. :) I won't bother you with the same long and boring post, so I'll be quick. Check the year 681, 632 and the names Khan Asparuh and Khan Kubrat.
PS: I've always liked romanian people, as I am living with many of them now, and they told me a nice little sentence I think it fits here: Duten pizda mati.
Yeah, JonathanStrange, why don't you tell the know-how of the "great" modern western economy?
5 centuries of colonialism, destruction, exploitation. Sucking riches like a leech from all over the world. Millions of natives slain all over Afrika, the Americas and Asia. Millions of Africans sold as slaves. Millions of Asians starved to death. Many countries all over the world today live in poverty, illiteracy, without basic medical attendance. As a result of the western economic "progress". The civilization you brought to them.
Long before your country was ever marked on any map there were great civilizations, great empires, great cultures. Greater than anything you will ever be. Or ever understand for that matter.
Empires rise and fall. Bulgarian empire fell in the 14 century, but fell with dignity together with all Slavonic countries in South-East Europe, saving your "Christian values" from the Islamic Ottoman invasion. In time the western empire will fall too. Disgracefully. Soon.
Whether some country's anthem or an Afrcan tribal drum beat they all should be paid the due respect.
Joseph LoDuka is a fine composer. He should know better. He did better with Bulgarian folk music in another movie.
And you JonathanStrange go give your economical advice somewhere else.
How can he tell me that my country's history doesn't figure in the club of the great empires? Bulgaria was great, I mean great the London gospell was written in Bulgaria in the time of Tzar Alexander, and yes we fell with dignity, the last defender of Turnovo (the old capital) was the Patriarch. I think we deserve a little bit of respect. And all "Macedonians" have nothing in common with Alexander The Great's people, they are 100% Bulgarians, excluding Serbians, Greek and Albanians. 10x for the attention :) And think hard before you post sorinakis81, and be sober. Aaaah I got it you are greek, 'sorinakis81' you all hate us, because we kicked Byzantine asses, it's normal, all wars we fought, we kicked you asses. Btw after 1878 our army haven't loss a battle, and haven't won a war... fact.
Just a thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kUsMZLt9pE Watch this and tell me if you (anyone) see the difference between the two things! In the movie you can hardly hear anything, while here you can hear the real anthem. With all its might and glory! I personally think that the two things can't be compared and the one in the movie can't even be called our anthem, at least not compared to this one... Isn't that way better now?
YOUR JELOUS THAT BULGARIA IS NOT artificialy MADE COUNTRY LIKE ROMANIA AND MACEDONIA!!!!
1. BULGARIA In the late 7th century a branch of the Bulgars led by Khan Asparuh migrated into the northern Balkans, where they merged with the local Slavic population and possibly remnants of the Thracian population to form the first Bulgarian state in >>>>>>AD 681<<<<. This was the first Slavic nation-state in history. The Bulgarian empire was a significant European power in the 9th and the 10th century, while fighting with the Byzantine Empire for the control of the Balkans. Founded in 681 and thus >>>>one of the oldest countries in Europe<<<<, Bulgaria is noted for not having ever changed its name through the ages. Today, the country is an active member of NATO, and is also due to join the European Union on January 1, 2007., WIKIPEDIA
2.IN THE AGES In >>>>>>>271 or 275<<<<<< the Roman army and administration left Dacia, which was invaded by the Goths, who lived with the local people until the fourth century, when another nomadic people arrived, the Huns. The Gepids and the Avars ruled Transylvania until the 8th century, after which the >>>>>>>>>Bulgars included the southern part of Romania in their Empire until 1018<<<<<<<<<<.
Romania in the Dark Ages
Main article: Romania in the Dark Ages
Different parts of the territory of present-day Romania were controlled as part of the Gothic Empire (Oium) from 271 until 378, the Hunnish Empire until 435, the Avar Empire during the 6th century, and the >>>>>>First Bulgarian Empire during the >>>9th through 11th centuries<<. Slavs, Magyars, Pechenegs, Cumans and Tatars (Mongols) also invaded the territory. => YOUR COUNTRY WAS UNDER OUR jurisdiction FOR MORE THAN 2 centuries IT'S A LOT.... REALLY A LOT!!!!
3. IF YOU GO TO MACEDONIA YOU SPEAK BULGARIA, AND TNE MACEDONIANS WILL UNDERSTAND YOU PERFECTLY! You know why??? >>>>>>>>> Many Macedonian students matriculate in >>>>Bulgarian universities<<< . >>>Bulgaria also supports the Macedonian bid to enter the EU and NATO. Bulgaria also donated tanks, artillery and other materials to the Macedonian army<<<.
The basic problem in the relationship between the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria is the latter's refusal to recognise the existence of a separate Macedonian ethnicity, instead considering >>>Macedonians to be Bulgarians and their language as a Bulgarian dialect<<<. Issues have been raised over what many Bulgarians view as appropriation and falsification of its history, and the treatment of people in the republic espousing a Bulgarian national identity. The pro-Bulgarian organization RADKO for example (which was later banned by the Macedonian Constitutional Court) had been publicly harassed after they demonstrated in front of the Macedonian parliament and claimed that there is no Macedonian nation today, and the perpetrators were acclaimed as heroes by the media. WIKIPEDIA
BUT WE ARE BETTER THAN ROMANIA!! ALL THE MONEY FOR THE EUROPIAN FUNDS ARE HERE! WE ARE BUILDING A LOT, AND AFTER 2 YEARS WE ARE GOING TO BE THE MOST PREFERED COUNTRY ON THE BOLKANS!!! AND NOW WE ARE THE MOST PREFERED FOR INVESTMENTS!
SO YOU ARE JELOUS!!!!!!!!!!!
AND ABOUTH THE NATION ANTEM: LIKE NikeBG SAID IT IS GLORY AND POWER!!!
NOBODY CAN USE IT WITHOUT OUR PRESIDENTS PERMISSION!!!!!!!
Stupid poor people... "we used to be an empire, with an emperor and stuff"... so was the Central African Republic and Jean Bedel Bokassa (research please!)....
You bulgarians "fighting for your honor" here are a SHAME for your fellow countrymen. Do them a favor and SHUT UP! This is a MOVIE WEBSITE!
Leave alone the poor greek, he is confussed and ignorant. He thinks that his nation has something to do with the old greeks. Face it greeks, now you're nothing more the the leaches, which suck hard on the EU. If you weren't so sleeky, you would be much worst than us.
''Who cares about a stupid Balkan country like that anyway'' I for one do. Exactly what do you think about us? That we are some sort of unimportant little *beep* Well, I guess you can have an opinion, but that is beside the point. The point is that, at some point during the production of this movie, some ignorant *beep* decided that our hymn would be suitable for scenes involving Nazis. I think that there are plenty of old Nazi related songs and hymns out there, why not use one of them? I don’t know what country you are from, but if we were to use your hymn in a similar way, you would be pissed off too. I don’t care how much my country is unimportant, or how much it has problems with corruption. It’s our hymn. IT’S MY HYMN! No stupid, second rate, American TV production has the right to mock it. There is nothing Nazi oriented in it, so why use it in the scene they used it in? They probably didn’t even know that it was a hymn. It must have sounded Eastern, and mysterious. Idiots...
Yes, many of you are right. We are a little country with poor people, but when our national Hymn is used in such movie, it is normal to have a reaction of our president Georgi Parvanov. This is normal for all countries. It's true that USA is many times bigger than Bulgaria and its economy is well-developed, but should They use our national Hymn for such purposes? Maybe, they owe our country an apology for their mistake?
I agree, well id be v. annoyed if they used 'God save the Queen' as music durin a scene involvin Nazis. I am British and tell to the truth, i have never been or plan 2 go 2 bulgaria, at least their president is actin resonably, Bush would have just attacked the country, coz they still found no WMDs in iraq have they, makin the war rather pointless, the main reason he attacked iraq (in my opinion) was that saddam hussien said 11th Sept was deserved, a statement that i totally disagree with, i no the recent 7th july bombings in london shocked our nation, and were no where near as devasting as 11th sept, so i cannot comprehend how bad the us must have felt.
Seriously, like, seriously. What on earth is this all about? This a huge drama all about... nothing and before anyone jumps on me that I've got issues with Bulgaria and I'm disregarding them as a country, just stop right there, please. I have no issues with any country, in my eyes, everyone is equal. I can see your point but look at what it's done? This entire subject has turned into a mini-war of Bulgaria versus the rest of the world. Remove that chip on your shoulder, please, it's not attractive.
Just let it go, like a further post where there are people screaming for public apologies and such as, hint of the overdramatic there? I'm sure the creators of the film didn't purposely sit down and think to themselves, "Hm... what country can we REALLY offend the most?" and then write it into their script. It was an alternate reality, did you ever think, by chance, according to the story, that in this alternate reality Bulgaria didn't save their jews? Possibly? And that was the point, to show how awful alternate realities could be? To make us FEAR what the traingle was capable of?
Nobody will ever take away from Bulgaria what they did for their Jews, but deep down, did your ancestors save them? Was it ALL Germans who killed Jews? Do ALL Germans want to kill Jews? No. It was just extremists that did it and Bulgaria's government countered that. So enough of the childish comments.
Oh? And PS, instead of casting Bulgaria in a bad light like you think this has, I didn't know it was the Bulgarian anthem and now I do and because of that, I now know that Bulgaria saved Jews, if anything, it makes me think more of Bulgaria then I did before, but you wouldn't look it from that angle.... maybe you should?
Im from Bulgaria, but I dont care about the history. I dont care also about that movie cause its not important. Its a movie. And it was a crap. I have only one thing to say. USA was created in the land of the native americans, most of them were slaved and killed. I wouldnt be proud if I lived in USA(America like they like you like to say it, you take the name of the whole continent like its yours).
Then tell me something - WTF are you doing here, if you don't care about the movie or Bulgaria???? Some of you are very strange people - you even don't know where on the map is Bulgaria, but even that you write some things... If it was for you country your opinion will be different. And tell me something else - don't you know that bulgarians were slaved and killed too? You definitely don't care about the history if you don't know that. I'm proud that i'm bulgarian, and i'm proud what our president have say. Our country is older than USA; Our country have so beautiful nature. So many people have say that - people fom England, people from France, people from China and America too. If you like USA - OK, stay there, but don't dare to say that you are from Bulgaria, cuz you definitely are not bulgarian.
You know what's REALLY funny to me, is how a national of a country with a state-owned media is convinced that a country WITHOUT any state-owned media is going to apologize for the actions of that media. I promise you, the ONLY reason why Native Americans are even being brought into this discussion, is that the OP doesn't want to be bothered with the logistics surrounding circumventing the First Amendment (unfortunately, that does include offensive speech, as much as that sucks) in favor of foreign policy.
Someone should tell him that it's a 2 minute sceene with an alternate world were Germany won the war.
Or someone should tell him that he is a *beep* moron. "a country with history one thousand and three hundred years old" wow... and in alla that time you seem to not have managed to educate one smart person. Get over yourself.
