Why the low International take?

I mean relatively, a lot of these films rely heavily on the international market to get these high grosses and this film actually came in under its domestic total. It was still an impressive amount just if it played like many other comic movies it could have been a billion dollar movie with its great domestic take. So what happened? and will it repeat itself with the next film?

And considering this, will the sequel make more or less. The film certainly benefited by the first time WW was brought to the big screen in her own solo film. WW2 won't have that going for it, it will be a sequel to a good movie, associated to a movie universe littered with bad movies.

Why the low International take? So what happened?

only pussywipped men paid to see it

The character was not as familiar with International audiences as WB might have thought AND female superheroes leading a film AND a World War I period piece might be stretch for some audiences.

Captain America: The First Avenger's International dollars barely outpaced Domestic.

WW2 will do quite well and audiences will be more familiar since WW and JL.

As i said in another post I am not sure I am buying the familiarity of the character issue, she has been around too long, was in a widely seen BvS, and is certainly more well know than Dr Strange which outperformed WW internationally.

As far as female superhero lead, that matters only to a few people. Its a female lead in an action film which is nothing new for audiences.

WW1, its just setting for a action film, its not a WW1 drama, so i am not sure that would matter much either.

Now the quality of the previous films I can see to a point and and certainly that has impacted JL.

I am wondering if we are going to see a bit of a flip next time around. The domestic performing worse perhaps under 400 mil and the international performing better. We will no longer have that WW first solo film bump, so i am curious how it will do coming off a poorly rcvd JL film.

The character isn't as well known in other countries as in the US and the previous films reception had a significant role to it aswell I believe.

Is that true though? WW has been around a long time, it even had a TV series that has certainly been syndicated globally at some point and DC has been releasing comics world wide for years. It would surprise me if WW had a smaller foot print than some of these other characters that have had success internationally, for instance Doctor Strange. Do you think Dr Strange was more known than WW across the globe? I doubt it.

reply

WW is more well known than Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man BUT that level of character awareness doesn't automatically extend beyond the comic-book and serialized TV fans or translate to a much larger potential film audience. Doesn't mean that WW makes for a solid lead to a movie outside of the US either. Thus was Hollywood's reluctance until you establish the character in cinema. WW was in BVS and her acceptance was good.

Wonder Woman got a TV series but so got The Flash later.

The succes of Dr. Strange has more to do with consumer trust (or in this case viewer trust) because it is a Marvel they believed it would be an entertaining film. DC before Wonder Woman didn't make a well received film and in other countries not many use Rotten Tomatoes as a source if it is good or bad.
