This trailer's a step in the right direction for a Punisher film

Below is the trailer for God of War: Ascension.

Look at the overwhelming pain on Kratos's face and how he buries it beneath his anger at the end. I believe Frank's suffering is very similar. Strip away all his military training and you will see his core: a man who had everything he loved stolen from him, leaving him completely empty inside. The Punisher fills his void. His extensive training makes him an efficient killer but his pain and anger drives the skull on his chest.

I've seen the Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson versions and both films gloss over his pain and focus on kill, kill, kill. If a Punisher film is truly going to work, the filmmakers have to let his inner battle tell the story.

Now I am definitely *NOT* saying a Punisher film can't have sweet, sweet vigilante justice; hell, the more the better. But the truth is no matter how many people he kills it won't give him peace until he faces that inner battle: forgiving himself for not protecting his family.

But wait, won't peace and forgiveness make him weak? Heavens no, my friend. It makes him human. It will lift his character from the comics and into real life where we can relate to him; once the viewers start to do that then the film's heading in the right direction.

I believe War Zone's story -not the script- had its heart in the right place. Frank bonded with the little girl; to do that he had to let some of his rage go and let his human side come through. And it certainly worked: at the end he first fights to save lives then fights to kill second. Unfortunately this important element was overshadowed by the rest of the film's shortcomings.

Ultimately I'm just a frustrated Punisher fan; he's such a resoundingly deep character with rich history but a film has yet to do him any justice. After reading through these posts I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

So what do the rest of you say? Am I on to something here or am I way off?
