shareNow you mention it they were very Eastern European looking. Film was OK i guess but very predictable.
Well my complain was mostly with the language ,they had terrible accents....
shareyeah, yeah, yeah. the accents are off. i know you don't realize this but making a movie is the art of compromise. i assure you, no one involved with this film said to themselves 'wouldn't it be cool to make a movie set in paris but actually use people who don't speak french in the cast!!!!' wow, how exciting. paris is one of the most expensive cities in the world in which to shoot. you have to understand making a movie is like being a kid who gets to go out to eat with his parents. most of the time, they order for you.
shareShooting in the city is expensive but what about hiring FRENCH actors ? Especially unknown ones ? I really doubt THEY would be expensive. Oh yeah, let's take Romanians instead because they won't complain even with third world country style salaries...
sharei guess what i am saying is that you are right. this was a disappointing part of the movie but being someone who has spent a lot of time in the movie business, i am all too famaliar with the extraordinary number of compromises that go into the filming of a movie. in this case, i happen to know, the problem was not the french actors' salaries it was the cost of boarding them in first class hotel (it was a SAG movie) for the duration of the movie that was the deciding factor. also for the record, it was not my decision to make i just happen to know the producers. also, not to belabor the point but the Los Angeles times was on set of this movie to write a kind of expose on how terible they thought the working conditions were going to be and how low the wages. instead, when the interviewed the crew most had dropped out of medical school or econ phd's because the money from the u.s./french/english and german films was so much better than they could expect to make in any other field. you can read the article at LAtimes.com, i think. the director's discuss this all to some extent on the director's commentary...
