Wait... what?
"We terrorized you and it's your fault you're terrified! You're stupid!" Perhaps Carolyn was just in shock over her friend's death, but blaming his death on her sister? Silly. This movie made no sense to me.

shareCarolyn's a bitch. The very reason why I loathed this movie is because of her. I can't tell you how much I squealed with joy when she died. How much I jumped for joy when she died again.
Look, if you're not smart enough to know that traumatizing people with what they are afraid of the most doesn't work by default, you're not smart enough. That's one.
Second: Carolyn takes every opportunity, and at one point creates one, to belittle and insult her sister for her psychological problems. She immediately takes Victoria to meet people whose business is to "scare the s*** out of people," ignores her pleas that she's been up for almost twenty-four hours and hasn't gotten any sleep and proceeds to take her to shopping (an exhausting venture even on a normal day) and then to an underground rave. There, she proceeds to mock her for not drinking booze while on meds. Then, she actively insults her for not wanting to go skinny dipping, repeatedly, in fact. Then, she allows Victoria to go off into the catacombs on her own, a place where she herself claims one can get lost easily.
There, when the flashlight's batteries die, she proceeds to wait until Victoria is panicking to tell her she has a spare light, this she does only to call her, repeatedly, a spaz.
Then, at the end, here's a bunch of factors she ignores: Victoria's bruised, she has wounds all across her back (which are bleeding), her leg, her arm, etc., she's shaking and too terrified to speak and cowering in a corner. Then, when it turns out Victoria snapped and killed who she thought was the Anti-Christ-Thingie, Carolyn just starts going like, "You're so frakkin' stupid"? Really? Is it that much of a trouble for you to just have an IQ above 80 and realize that while some people react to fear by learning from it and some just snap?
It is obvious that the point of the movie was that Carolyn absolutely loathes Victoria, because throughout, she displays an active desire to belittle, insult, hurt, discomfort, scare, psychologically and physically torture her.
You're right on many counts, but still go overboard in describing Carolyn. She was annoyed at the boys when they first scared Vic in the apartment, thought that Vic would be fine because the boys had played the same prank numerous times, apologized for her nastiest insult and went after Vic when she tried to venture into the catacombs by herself. Yes, she was a witch, but not a monster.
shareNot a monster? less than 24 hours after having seen her sister for the first time in apparently a long time, she is pushing her and screaming she f%#king hates her after ruining what is left of her already brittle mind. That goes a few levels above witch.
But then again, her whole family is probably not quite sane to begin with, although they must be loaded. a spur of the moment flight to Paris ain't exactly cheap. And its more likely than not that she isn't able to work the kind of job that pays well with all the anti depressants and other "nerve calming" pills she is taking. And if her sister is always belittling her as she does, her choice of blindly giving in to an invitation to go to a strange country to take some more punishment just doesn't seem well thought out to begin with. I suppose I'd give her credit for trying to learn 1 sentence even if she laughs at her own failure. 1 sentence!
Mentally inept sisters, that's the back story that makes sense to me given the complete lack of one in the movie.
