It's not good entertainment.
As a movie, it's not good. It's mediocre.
It's not even entertainment, as it's not particularly entertaining. It's not as boring as it could be, but it's more cringy than entertaining for the most part.
This movie is exceptional in one way; I have never seen ANYTHING as square middle in the 'mediocre' spectrum as this movie.
I have seen better movies, I have seen worse movies, but I hve never, ever seen a more mediocre movie in my life.
However, people are right when they say this movie seems different on the second viewing. I watched it again after a year or so, and it's actually a bit better than I remember (but still not actually good). It's almost like a very different movie on the second viewing.
There's nothing in this movie that would raise it above mediocrity - Robin Williams is a comedic genius, but in this movie, he just seems to try to force stale jokes through heavy depression, and go through the motions.
The wife is very good, of course, as we know her from Curb Your Enthusiasm - her performance is probably 100% what this movie needs, but all in all, forgettable.
The kids are lackluster and easy to forget completely (as I indeed did during the year). I researched a bit into the whole 'Jojo' thing, and she can sing, but she doesn't have 'charisma' or beauty, she's not cute or very feminine. I suppose as a grumpy teenage daughter, she's perfect for the role, but I wouldn't want her to be my daughter, and I certainly wouldn't want to have anything to do with her.
The ending thing proves she knows how to sing better than the rest of the cast, but so what, lots of people can. Her acting is good, though, she's very believable as the sister or daughter you absolutely hate (for good reasons).
It's hard for me to even understand how someone can't realize how wrong they are praising this movie so much, when their rationale for it is that a four year-old loved it just as much as some teenager did. Talk about LCD.
