Was the trailer a spoof?

That can't seriously be the movie. This has to be a Funny or Die prank. Why not have Tom Hanks play the part. This is simply "Big" with superpowers.

I don't remember Captain Marvel being a goofy moron. Am I remembering wrong? I understand they didn't want dark and gritty, but that doesn't mean they had to jump to the extreme other side of the spectrum.

It bothered me as well. I forgot about "Big," but that's a great comparison.

Captain Marvel/Shazam predates Big by several decades. Yes, it was always humorous. It was not slapstick, but it never took itself seriously. With villains like Mr. Mind (a worm) and fellow Marvel family members Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr. and Uncle Marvel (who was a fraud who blamed his inability to help on his Shazambago!) and other characters like Talky Tawny, a talking tiger, a dead serious film would not live up to the original comic.

reply

Yeah, this definitely doesn't need the Snyder touch.

The same could be said about Superman, and most DC properties, pre-1980s. It took DC a looooong time to catch up to Marvel in the "making comics for kids and adults alike" department.

All that said... WTF??? That trailer is ridiculous, and the previous poster nailed it. It absolutely looks like the sort of Funny or Die video I'll scroll past in my Facebook feed. Shazam even looks like Jimmy Fallon in hastily-applied makeup. Nothing about the trailer looks serious, and I'm astonished that this is the movie they're apparently giving us.

It may pay off. Poor quality doesn't necessarily mean a flop; look at Venom for a recent example. No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public...

reply

No, actually it can't. Superman has had humorous periods, but it was never the base of the character. Captain Marvel/Shazam always had a humorous base and intent from its very beginnings. And has maintained that for decades. I haven't read comics since the latter 80's with any regularity; but while I was the humorous aspect was central to the strip.

reply

Humorous is the wrong word, but Superman was definitely goofy af. He had Krypto his super puppy in a cape, there was a Super-Girl and a Super-Baby and generally it was silliness aimed at small children.

reply

I'm afraid I cannot agree. But we obviously have different perceptions here, so I see no reason to pursue it.

reply

No, I think the DC people are finally making a comedy! Or rather, an intentional comedy. "Aquaman" was one of the funniest films I've seen in years, but mostly in ways that weren't planned.

I look forward to seeing how the notoriously humor-impaired DC fanboys react to a superhero comedy.
