That tree they were running to at the end?

What was the significance?

I took that whole scene to be symbolism for the Genesis bible story... So the children were representative of Adam and Eve in the garden and eden and the tree being the tree of life/knowledge.

yep, that is how i took it as well. although I would like that it would take a critical mass of humans to continue the human race, and not just 2 kids.

If you noticed, there were many ships leaving the new planet so I take it that meant there were many Adam and Eve's deposited on the same planet in different areas so they could eventually meet and mix when grown up and have enough genetic diversity for viable population.

The only difference being that they weren't the only children being brought to the planet as evidenced by the other spaceships landing in the distance.

I assume that's where the kids will find instructions on how to hunt, grow crops, build homes, and generally not die, being abandoned on this foreign planet.

When I was that age, my parents left me alone for 4 hours and I accidentally set the living room carpet on fire.

I'm sure everything will work out fine, just like it did in The Lord of The Flies.

well, there is the probability that the "whispering people" aka alien angels, took up a Cain, so who knows ?

presumably, those alien overwatchers will be keeping tabs on those kids in some manner.

The tree is an homage to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil of the Garden of Eden. The implication is that despite living in a doomed Universe humanity lives on.
