Let's put this argument to rest once and for all, shall we:

- they were all male
- they collected only CHILDREN
- they enticed each child with a fluffy bunny rabbit, and what child wouldn't like a fluffy bunny rabbit?
- they drove around in nondescript 4-door sedans
- they all wore frock coats....FROCK COATS, for God's sake!!!

They were a gang of intergalactic pedophiles.

Mystery solved.
