So the deleted scene on the DVD about Chazz's backstory
The scene I'm talking about is the one where Chazz is helping Jimmy get ready for his date with Katie. I liked the scene because it serves so many purposes, and I felt it should have been left in the movie.
One thing it does is it shows us that Chazz and Jimmy are beginning to bond. I did really enjoy the movie, but the way it is edited, I find it a little hard to believe these two guys go from being bitter rivals, to enemies, to friends, so quickly. There are a few deleted scenes that to me would have helped make it more believable, and this is one of them. We see Chazz, who made such a big deal of no one touching his whalebone brush, offering it to Jimmy. Jimmy rejects it, and the audience can see that Chazz sees his offer as a way of offering friendship and himself, and Jimmy's rejection is a rejection not only of the brush, but of that friendship. The rejection makes Chazz flash back to the last time he opened himself up as a child at the orphanage, when he was rejected for what he felt was the last and final time. It turns out Jimmy's dad almost adopted Chazz, since they were kids at the same orphanage.
Chazz vowed then to never let anyone else in to his heart.
I think they should have left the scene in. It does so much, and explains Chazz's character in a way the rest of the movie doesn't.
It makes the lone wolf tatoo make sense, and Chazz's comment that ice doesn't belong in the heart (at the end of the movie)makes sense also. It shows us WHY he resents Jimmy, and WHY he literally has no family or friends at his shows.
They end the deleted scene with Chazz telling Jimmy the truth, and we don't see Jimmy's reaction or response. I guess one was written, and I would have loved to see that, also. It would have tied things together more neatly, and it would have helped us to understand how and why these two guys made peace with each other.
I still very much enjoyed the movie, I just think it was one thing that should have been included in the final cut.
