The affair - SPOILER WANTED
Why did Kiefer Sutherland's character think that Michael Douglas had slept with his wife?
shareWhy did Kiefer Sutherland's character think that Michael Douglas had slept with his wife?
shareUnless I missed it or there's a different cut of the film, I don't think they explained it thoroughly. there was one scene where Douglas talks to the ex-wife, but I don't remember anything important being said, I assumed there'd be more, but she was never on screen again.
shareI just watched it last night, and i don't think it was ever made clear.
There's a scene where Douglas is talking to the wife, and begging her to tell Sutherland she didn't have an affair with him -- it's not clear, but I *think* the implication was that she had had an affair with *someone*, but wouldn't tell Sutherland who it was; and Sutherland had come to suspect that Douglas was having an affair, but didn't know that it was actually with the First Lady, and so Sutherland just assumed that his wife's affair and Douglas' affair were one and the same.
But it doesn't quite make sense, and it doesn't explain why, once Sutherland finds out it wasn't his wife that Douglas was having an affair with, and it wasn't Douglas that his wife was having an affair with, he's ready to forgive his wife, just like that. She still cheated on him !! And it seems he's ready to hate both her and Douglas when he thinks it was Douglas she was sleeping with, but as soon as he finds out it wasn't, he's ready to be friends with *both* of them again ? Just like that ? If I were Douglas, I'd be keeping my distance from both of them.
But then, I guess that's Hollywood: never mind what makes sense for people to do, just have the people do what makes sense for the plot.
Not a whole lot about this movie made very much sense anyway.
You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.
i don't remember this in the movie
must be a region thing
i.e different countries have different bits and pieces of the film and even different endings thats why one film can have different remarks and results to audiences
eg. "i am legend" U.S version looked more like the trailer, more uncut bits and had some stupid moral to the story and 'will' walks off like nothing happened
where as the aussie version i saw will smith took a grenade and blew himself AND the zombies out in one shot (lol that was sum grenade)
the sentinel i saw didn't show any part that stated m'douglas was innocent. They probably cut it out as the movie made no sense anyways...i mean why suspect m'douglas in the first place unless he had something to hide?? they probably thought it was too confusing to the audience and left it out of the film.
His wife repeatedly said that she didn't have an affair with anyone. They didn't really explain why Jack thought she was cheating on him. Maybe it was that he thought Pete was having an affair with someone and his wife was different or something so when he found out it was the First Lady, he knew that his wife wasn't cheating. The whole affair thing was a sub-plot that they didn't really pay enough attention to and explain properly.
