Seriously, who would spend 1000 bucks to go from NYC to Boston

when a freaking train ticket costs only 13 bucks? And this is BEFORE Chris Evans' character knew why she so desperately wanted to get to Boston.

If you're wealthy, no problem, I guess LOL.

But why did he even offer to pay ? She was a totally stranger at that point.

His credit cards were probably stolen or fake or he knew they wouldn't work he was just trying to impress her.

AND he was a musician playing at Grand Central.... For him to even offer to pay $1,000+tip to some stranger (hot girl or not) in NYC is ridiculous! I've lived in Manhattan for the last 7 years...there were times where I'd go starving for days or couldn't afford a train ride ($2.75). So for some train station, instrument-playing person at a place like Grand Central offering to pay $1,000+ that easily and quickly?!?! I laughed so hard at that part. If anything, his cards getting declined was even funnier... Come on, now... Cute movie though.

We don't ever see either of their homes, if I remember correctly. It's very possible that he had plenty of money, and didn't know yet if she was just on the hustle for some money or a (redeemable) ticket. As for his card getting declined, that really doesn't mean squat. I've had a card (with a $15k limit and less than $500 balance on it) declined, and when I called the bank, they told me that it was because they "saw" our other card...my husband's... being used in Japan (business trip), and thought mine had been stolen. I told her to look at the billing address, then look where I was using my card, and where he was using his. She said, "Ooooh! Well, in the future, you should let us know if one or both of you are traveling so this doesn't happen again." What followed was not a pretty thing to hear. They've never done it again, though. And the card that was declined because it was expired just shows that he didn't need or use it often enough to notice that it wasn't good any more. And he might have been playing in a train/bus/whatever station simply because he enjoyed doing it. My nephew is a wonderful trumpet player, and LOVES playing. He'd find a way to do it even if he lost all his fingers in a freak garbage disposal accident. Lol
As to "why" he would help her, how about simple kindness? People are always moaning and groaning about how badly we treat each other, but when someone does try to go above and beyond for someone else, we find it suspicious or ask ourselves what's in it for him/her. I think that that's very sad. Maybe we should all glance up from our phones once in a while, and look at the world around us. Even if it's just to make eye contact with someone and smile. A real smile...with teeth and everything. I guarantee it would brighten up my/your day and theirs. And before anyone asks.. Yes, I've done things like this. Picked up a young hitch-hiker, brought him home, washed and dried his clothes while hubby gave him new razors, shaving cream, toothbrushes and toothpaste, etc., and our kids colored pictures for him and his them in his pockets for him to find later. Turned out that he was from England and had been "on holiday" here for over a month, and hadn't spoken to his mom since he got here. So we let him call her; she was so happy to hear from him that she cried. Now my kids have kids, and we still talk about Peter all these years later. Not a big deal for us, but for a young man alone in a different country, needing a good meal, a shower, and clean clothes, it was a very big deal.
Kindness is free. What are we holding it back for?

He did say he was playing there to sort out what he was going to play at his audition. So maybe he didn't need the money at all.

He was concerned for her safety. She had no money and no ID on her.

He did go to school to be a doctor. He probably comes from money.

Music is his passion though
