crucial bit of Simon Ross sequence is nonsensical

I love the Bourne movies but the more I watch them the more glaring Bourne's mistakes become. in the Simon Ross sequence, right after Bourne has beaten up the surveillance team, Bourne and Ross wait outside the door before Bourne exits into the crowd alone. this is the same door which Ross is snipered from moments later.
What makes no sense is this:

Why did Ross not walk out with Bourne right away?

and it is nothing more than pure luck, if that, that the asset didn't kill Bourne as soon as he exited the door. it was just very convenient that at that moment he was still putting together his rifle.

bourne and ross should have exited together and on top of that bourne made a really dumb mistake and put himself in huge danger by exiting from that door at all.

is there something I'm missing? I hope so, cause these mistakes strike at the very core of what makes the bourne movies so great...

Asset wasn't told to look for Bourne. He was given instructions to find Ross and kill him alone.... if Blackbryer had sent him instructions to kill Ross and Bourne, then it would have been different.

Also, Bourne didn't know about the Sniper in the roof, so told Ross to stay put while he checked out the scene (like I said, Blackbryer were not looking for Bourne, so he had a degree of freedom to walk around)

ah yes, that explains it perfectly. thanks.

but wait! I've discovered more on the parchment!

I just rewatched it and after bourne destroys the surveillance team, vosen says to give the asset the green light to take them both out. so the asset did have instructions to kill them both.

as far as bourne not knowing there was a sniper that's true. he's not omniscient and indeed it was impressive how he sensed there was one by the cameras all turning away....BUT when bourne looked squarely into the camera after destroying the surveillance team he should have known for sure that his cover was blown at that point. so from that point on bourne should have known that he too was a target.

so, in conclusion, while it MAY have been too much for bourne to expect a sniper, he absolutely should have known he was a target AND he got very lucky he wasn't snipered himself.

He was in a crowded area in the most camera heavy city in the world. A sniper wouldn't have even been on his mind.

this is the sequence of events:
-bourne takes out agents and is spotted on camera
-vosen believes him to be the leak, gives green light to have him taken out by sniper as well.
-bourne and ross retreat storage room
-sniper arrives at perch, sets up rifle
-bourne instructs ross to stay; bourne exits
-sniper receives incoming message. bourne is included as a target.
-sniper kills ross

prior to arriving on the scene, vosen et al had no information of bourne being on the scene. therefore, he was not an original target. once it is discovered that he is the man in ross' ear, vosen believes him to be the source of the leak. he then instructs the assassin to take him out. bourne was out of the room before assassin knew of him.

also, bourne kept ross sheltered because knew that ross was the primary target. bourne also knew he had adequate skills to elude cameras and agents. at this point he was not aware of a sniper. once he saw the cameras being turned, he was alerted to the possibility of a sniper. once ross was shot, the snipers position was given up and bourne could effectively elude the crosshairs.

what it comes down to, at least in my mind is bourne was confident in his own abilities, but realised that ross wouldn't be able to remain as elusive as he. he then left in an effort to find an exit for them, after all, inaction in that situation would be more deadly than action. once they became pinned down, they would have very few options.

hope that clears it up.

Thats the way I see it.

Though the Assets are tarined to think on their feet (like Bourne in Berlin with Netski) in a crowded place like that the asset would have a job on his hands trying to take out both.

Obviosly because Ross was the original target, if he was to take out one it was to original one.

Not sure if Paz had a target yet. I believe his prior instructions were to get in position. (also remember that Ross was not the primary concern; it was always the unknown source.) Then when Vosen gave the green light for both Ross and Bourne, we see Paz' phone with both images (Bourne on left, Ross on right). IF that was the only target indication to Paz, then he would not know which was the 'original.'

Also, I would think that Bourne always handled his assignments discreetly, and would also expect the same of other assets. When he sees teams of agents tracking Ross, as well as all the active cameras, it's reasonable to think that he doesn't expect it to be a hit (he must have also seen the abduction of the guy in the bus). It isn't until he sees the agents pull back and the cameras turned away that he realizes that the situation had changed. By then he was already out in the crowd, but Ross was still in the last known (and thus targeted) location.

Also keep in mind what happens right after Bourne dispenses with the grab team.

He goes to the door, looks out and goes outside to check things out. He is taking a risk to be sure, but its a calculated one. They can't stay there.

But here's the thing: Bourne is in the terminal looking around. He then see's the terminal camera's turn away and inward. All of them. He now KNOWS that the powers that be are going to do a killing and don't want any record of it.

It's only when the camera's turn away that Bourne knows they will try to kill Simon rather than grab him.

If anyone was going to protect Simon Ross from the hit squad out to kill him, it was Jason Bourne. Simon Ross should have known that fact, given the research he was allegedly doing on Jason Bourne. However Simon Ross decided that he knew better than Jason Bourne, so he ignored the advice from Bourne and almost immediately thereafter Simon Ross was killed by the sniper.

In the circumstances it was an appropriate outcome for the pig-headed, know-all Simon Ross.
