At the end she grabs Bourne's hand out of affection it would seem, but she looked like was pretty blank emotionally, she didn't say a word from the time Bourne saved her to the very end when he tells her it easier, at that point she just turns away and gets on the bus. Julia Styles is a pretty good actress, just hard to get a read on her in the movie..
In case you missed it, Bourne used Desh's asset phone to confirm him and Nicky dead. Then he told her she would have to run and hide like he had for years. She wash the color out of her hair and cut it as a disguise, and he probably gave her money and sent her on her way.
Also, and even I didn't pick this up, it's implied that Nicky and Bourne had an affair before his amnesia.
Actually, I don't think it made any sense for them to have been romantically involved earlier on, because there is no hint of it in the first two films (she doesn't react to his photo at all in TBI when she first sees it and when she is panic stricken in TBS when she is pleading with him not to kill her, surely she would have said something like 'Don't you remember me? I'm Nicky!'?) Not only that, but Bourne is desperate to find out about his past and now he's found someone who evidently remembers him but he doesn't ask her a single question about it? And she doesn't try to make him remember, even though she knows how important it is to him? I think it was only included in the third film to provide a motive for her helping him, but it could have been done simply along the lines of her already knowing he isn't the cold blooded killer he's supposed to be - if he was, she'd have been dead at the end of the first film - and thus deciding to help him now. The hint of a relationship is clunky and doesn't go anywhere in the end, IMHO. Nevertheless, still a terrific film.
I agree, they dropped the ball on the Nicky/Bourne connection.
But it can make a bit of sense when looked at in the context of the film and the world the characters inhabit.
First of all, the affair had to have been secret from the get go. I seriously doubt Treadstone would have wanted its agents experiencing meaningful relationships.
Second, we don't know how long they were together. It appeared to me the affair just got started before Bourne lost his memory.
Third, even from the first film there were many parallels drawn between Nicky and Marie.
Fourth, the CIA story was that Bourne went rogue, had a mental breakdown and was seeking revenge on his former coworkers. Believe me the last thing anyone would want to do is try to have a heart to heart with someone who appears to be on a mass murder spree. Nicky falling apart when alone with Bourne is very believable.
To end, she didn't push the connection or try to make him remember because that time was over and the Bourne persona was dying. Still I have a feeling that Nicky and David Webb might meet again.
Greengrass has specifically said he wanted it to be vague. Something significant happened, obviously, but we're left to wonder what it was. I suspect that the idea is that we never have any more knowledge of Bourne's prior life than Bourne does.
In this film, while they are in the coffee shop on the way to Tangier, Bourne asks Nicky about why she is helping him. She replies that it was difficult for her, with him. Then, there is an awkward pause with no emotion from him. She then asks something to the effect that he really doesn't remember anything, to which he replies "No".
I'd say there was something real going on between them, before the failed mission in the first film, and his amnesia.
Yes, and they did that on purpose. Maybe they're going to reveal a little more in the upcoming movie, but I seriously doubt it. I think that was a nice plot line they created, though, and it wasn't too much, because the audience were left wondering what their relationship was. But maybe they're just going to leave it at that. Though I don't understand why they would create such a good plot line and then ruin it. Julia Stiles is underrated. Great actress, yes.
