Nicky and Jason/David

What is their history?

I've read the other thread on this but I'd like the director's opinion. It seems bizarre to have this line in and mean nothing.

Chances are, it will be addressed in the next film, which will see the two of them reunited AND Bourne with his memories back.

There have been numerous interpretations over the years though. Personally, I don't think it was anything necessarily romantic...but more a kind of professional, semi-personal, connect they may have built up after three years of working together.

I always tried to read in some sort of connection in this conversation:

Bourne-"Why are you helping me?"

Nikki-"It was difficult for me...with you"

Thats literally JUST below the line of how much information I'd need to dissect those lines. So yes, hopefully it is addressed further in this summer's sequel

For some reason I doubt it'll be of much importance. She lures Bourne out of hiding after 12 years. That's a long time. Yes? He remembers everything, but I doubt it'll be addressed. I was kind of hoping for flashbacks at least, as it seems like SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

Julia Stiles is going to bite dust. It's so awfully similar to Marie's story. The chase, not in Goa this time, but in Athens, a sniper, explosions, boom. It's a shame, really. They built such an interesting storyline around Jason and Nicky and now they're not going to use it?

It was definitely romantic, because that was the director's intention, as he states in the audio commentary on the hard box DVD of Ultimatum.

Plus, would you really risk your life for someone and be prepared to go into hiding for the rest of your life if you didn't feel anything for them? This is clearly hinted at a former relationship.

I really thought their history was somehow romantic for this scene that Nicky refers to. I rewarded 'Supremacy' to see if I missed anything, but I go with that Nicky refers to the harsh treatment Bourne gave her in Berlin when he tells Landy he wants Nicky to meet him at the plaza and then takes her below street level and has the gym to her head until he realizes she is being truthful with him. Like Landy, Nicky is smart enough to realize that Bourne is not the evil menace the rest of the CIA want to make him out to be.

You're barking up the wrong tree. It was definitely romantic and she wasn't hinting at the Berlin scene, because she asks "You really don't remember anything?" And he clearly remembers Berlin. So what she's referring to happened before his amnesia.

They were in a relationship and that's what the authors intended, as stated by Greengrass in the hard metal DVD box of Ultimatum.

Plus, the original script with deleted scenes of Bourne Supremacy also suggests a relationship. The original is uploaded somewhere. They just cut that part.

Everyone needs to watch the coffee shop in Madrid scene again. It wasn't romantic at all. She was there from the beginning. How did she know where to locate Daniels (This was explained in the film)? She tells Bourne about the program.

You asked this question before. And I replied on the "Jason Bourne" forum. It all makes sense. Trust me.

Bourne Ultimatum Production Notes

"There is a great resolution to her character," adds Damon, "when you
realize her history with Bourne. It's two young people again, and they're
on the run. They end up in many of the same situations Bourne and Marie
were in, but it's clear that there can never be anything more between
them because of decisions they made in their lives."
