Which Homages Did You See?

Finally got around to watching this, right off the bat noticed the "RJ MacReady" store, that was cool (obviously the whole movie is basically a comedic version of 'The Thing'). The Predator music when they were all getting guns was a nice touch, when the slug was in the bathtub it was a mixture of Nightmare on Elm Street and Jaws (for the comedic value). Night of the Living Dead with the 'not really zombies' walking around saying "meat". The scene with the deer was possibly an homage to Evil Dead II among others.

The Nightmare On Elm Street bath tub scene was the most obvious.

Though, when she hacked open the door, I expected her to shout; "Here's Johnny."

reply

I also expected that

"I don't give a fu*k about your war or your President."

reply

Ha, I opened this thread seeing if someone caught the Predator music too. This movie is great.

Was the concept of the movie a homage to Night Of The Creeps?

reply

I didn't really notice that but I'm sure there was some influence there

reply

For sure... the same basic premise. In fact, I watched this for about fifteen minutes thinking I was re-watching Night of the Creeps before I realized it was a different movie.

reply

Shivers, and Croenberg in general.

reply

Yeah.

reply

Shivers even influenced Alien. It's hugely important in the "body horror" genre.

I cried when I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet. And then I laughed...really hard.

reply

Toxic Avenger scene playing on Brenda's TV was a great shout-out.

reply

Great shout out to Troma in general since Gunn's first produced screenplay was Tromeo and Juliet

reply

I thought there were a lot of influences/homages to From Beyond: the tentacle coming out of the body and the way Grant was mutated.
