Until I moved to the midwest I never really thought about it. Never really needed screens and I never owned an air conditioner before. Kept my pace cool by always leaving the front door open. My 'screen' door was wrought iron with bars far enough apart I could stick my hand through it.
No (as I lament a lifetime of bad decisions) if I don't keep screens closed on every single window of my house, it'll fill with bugs. Fresh air is a thing of the past

Exactly, I don't think a single home anywhere in the UK has any sort of screen. Though parts of here in Scotland can use them thanks to the Highland midge and it's voracious appetite for human flesh. Little bastards!

Up here are required for a C.O. but down south I've seen a number of houses without screens.
