the Leslie Vernon tips of the hat/reference thread

Hi I just saw this movie like three weeks ago and had to buy it. I thought there should be a thread here about the movies that are referenced. Going by the trivia and the other threads on this board:

1. Reference to Halloween: The Red Rabbit Lounge is seen during the opening scene. Michael Myers is referenced several times throughout the movie, including a mention of Haddonfield during the opening.
2. Reference to the Friday the 13th franchise: Jason Voorhees and Crystal Lake are mentioned several times.
3. Reference to A Nightmare on Elm Street: Springwood and Elm Street are mentioned during the opening; several references made to Freddy Kruegar.
4. Reference to Child's Play: Chucky is mentioned once.

That gets the obvious ones out of the way. What elese?

Nightmare on Elm Street: The girls jumping rope at the high school when Leslie is describing picking an ideal victim.

Halloween: The sitting up motion when he appears to be dead or unconcious in the barn and the end of the film.

The bodies awaiting unsuspecting people fleeing falling out of the shed etc. Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc.

Halloween: getting badly burned and surviving(Halloween 2)

Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The panel van

Poltergeist: Not an exact reference but the paranormal lady from that movie played the librarian.

Some of those are fairly simple and there a few more that are slipping my mind at the moment. I'm pretty sure the pothole digger is a reference as well although I forget from where.

There are tons of subtle horror genre references throughout though that don't necessarily have ties to one film. The scene where he's right outside the window scraping it slightly for example.

I'll try to see if I can remember any more.

Pet Semetary and Pet Semetary 2: The pet turtles are named Church and Zoe, after the cat in PS1 and the dog in PS2.

Maniac (1980): The scene when Leslie cries and says "I'm so happy" is a reference to the killer in this movie, who cries and says the same thing while lying next to a corpse.

The Shining: Evidently the background music played when Leslie is putting on his facial gel is from this movie.

our only salVation is in chAos and disoRder

Kelly Curtis: Lots of Final Girls/Survivor Girls have unisex first names (like Taylor in this movie, Stretch in TCM 2, Chris in F13 3, Sidney in "Scream", etc.); I assume "Curtis" (and Jamie, another experienced Survivor Girl) for Jamie Lee Curtis.

"His name is Leslie Mancuso": Frank Mancuso produced several F13s.

Doc Halloran: Halloran was the psychic cook in "The Shining", who called Danny "Doc".

Oh, yeah! And the virgin at the high school, whom Leslie cited as a typical Survivor Girl, was named Carrie (according to a deleted scene).

When Taylor gets ready to fight Leslie in the apple orchid she says "Come get some", which is what Ash says in Evil Dead.

When the female lead removes her out shirt for just a tanktop this seemed like a reference to the French film High Tension's mirrored action by the heroine.

Kelly Curtis is a blond who wears her hair in a pony tail and works at a diner much like Alice in A Nightmare On Elm Street 4.

When they first walk into the "ancestral home", the camera pans to the left and shows the same make and model piano that Ash plays in the Evil Dead.

The tool shed may also be an Evil Dead reference.

I may be mistaken but I felt as though Leslie and the filmmakers took a few jabs at Scream.

In one scene when Leslie is talking about the virgin grabbing an axe to try to kill him it represents a phallic object. He then states that no one wants to see the killer killed by a "puny little gun". All of the Ghostface Killers were killed with guns by Sidney.

In another scene when Leslie and Eugene are talking about the "hacks" out there ruining their profession they talk about the lame killers that run around without a plan, killing sorority girls and end up getting killed. That sort of sounds like the Scream series, especially Scream 2. Although that could be any slasher out there so I could be wrong.

It's a horror film. People live, people die and you'd better start running!-Scre4m

It actually does. Ghostface always has a plan.

There's a reference to the TCM series and remakes in a deleted scene. Les mentions spending time in Texas and "helping a friend reinvent his thing."

Also, it's not a horror movie, but the part where Leslie removes the stoner's heart made me think of Temple of Doom.

Let a little insanity into your life.

the extreme tit shot was a definite nod to the friday the 13th series. this movie HAD to have tits in it to pay tribute to the slasher genre, and every jason movie has to have at least 2 pairs.
