The Closet

why did the movie bother telling us all the info about the closet being the womb and then not have it come up later? why would the characters to whom he explained the closet rule in detail conveniently forget this later when desperately looking for a way to foil his plans and save the remaining teens? was there a deleted scene or was this just cramming in more heavy-handed fruedian theory with no intention of it actually meaning anything? sometimes an axe is just an axe because it's hard to kill someone with something vagina shaped.

It's my guess that the entire closest scene was either:
A) Just another attempt to explain one of the common horror cliches. E.G. you're watching a horror movie, and the girl is hiding in the closet and the killer is in the room. "She's right there! Why doesn't he just kill her?" This kinda explores why.
B) It was supposed to make you think it was important later. So you'd be expecting it, and not see other things coming (like the knife in Funny Games.) Of course, YMMV on whether or not this actually worked.

As to why Taylor and co. didn't try it out, I have no idea.

That's one thing that annoyed me in this movie.. all the Freudian babel was just pointless.

His explanations are seen in a new light when it's discovered that Kelly is not his actual target. It would be assumed that he was trying to trick her into trapping herself.

if a serial killer told you that he wouldn't kill you if you hid in a closet would you believe him? by that time they'd already established that he wasn't quite playing by the rules he'd laid out so it'd be a really stupid risk to take

The same reason they forgot everything they were told.

Eugene explained very specifically to Taylor and her buddies how to survive:
-Run and don't stop until the sun comes up.
-Don't try to hide.
-Don't try to be a hero and fight.
-If you stick together, make sure there's someone slower than you when you try to run.

They didn't run, they just stayed in the house. Even after they found out their van was disabled, they all went back into the house. They tried to hide, they tried to be heroes. The fat guy ran off on his own, defeating the purpose of being a distraction for the others to outrun.

Taylor is in the closet when he makes the first kills. It's only important that she be a part of all the symbolic imagery.
