Are all video store clerks morons?

Or is it just the ones that work at Family Video? Before anyone gets angry with my statements realize that they were a joke. However, the clerks at my local Family Video are most assuredly morons and do not deserve to work in a store where they are required to recommend films to customers. The manager of the store noticed I was renting this movie and proceeded to laugh at me and then told me she felt sorry for me because I was renting this atrocious film (she didn't use that particular word, I believe it may have been outside of her vocabulary). This seemed rather absurd since every review I have read said Behind the Mask is the breath of fresh air American horror needs and after viewing I have to agree.

This was by far the most creative horror film I have seen coming out of the United States in a long time. It's just sad that when people go to that particular store and ask for advice on movies they have to deal with individuals who cannot appreciate original and imaginative films.

I myself am a clerk at Family Video in Glenview, IL. We are not all morons. This is my number one recommendation when people come in asking for a "cool horror movie." Just wanted to clarify that some video store clerks are actually meant for the job. I myself am one of those.

Everyone has different tastes. To be honest I never ask the people who work at the stores opinion on any movie that I am going to rent. Especially horror, you need to know your own taste in them.

Ummmm I am just doing some info before watching the flick, so I can't give my opinion quite yet....

But I am a video store clerk, and not a family one if you mean blockbuster or some big company, I work at a locally owned one with a porn room and everything. I am also a film student and consider my opinions when it comes to movies very open minded and honest, so know I don't think all clerks are idiots. :) Had to say it.

Cool, I go to Family Video too and my clerks seem to be pretty competent.

No offense but I grew up watching all the famous slasher films in grindhouses during the late 70s and early 80s. I saw the films that he was emulating when they first came out. Granted they were not all good but then again...in my opinion...neither is this one. The premise was intriguing, that is why I rented it. The problem was it was too stupid at times and it could have done with a killer with some charisma and it could have definitely used better writers. Then.....just maybe...they would have had something. Hopefully they don't try to beat a dead horse with Leslie Vernon as they did all the classics.

I actually work for Blockbuster as a DM and I get to screen movies occasionally. This one was so freaking entertaining, that I recommended to my superiors to get it and put in on our shelves. I have talked this movie up to many employees and many customers. Not everyone loves, but I haven't talked to anyone who hates it.

As a side note, having required recommendations is stupid. I have told many customers how bad I thought some bad movies were. People appreciate the honesty. For an employee to laugh at your selection, course this isn't the top of the line chain your talking about, is just poor service and, frankly, stupid.

Where do you live!? Because I've never had a District Manager that watched anything outside of the big summer movies, for the most part they know very little about the actual movies, it's just all product to them. If I worked for you, I probably wouldn't have quit a while back.

Either way, to the thread started, as a former employee for 2 years, I'd have to say that nearly 70% of video store clerks don't watch movies as a hobby, they do it just because they can, not out of actual love. I personally watched nearly every movie I rented, and I even had the online service most of my time at Blockbuster. On top of that, I go to the movies at least 4-6 times a month.

Not all video store clerks are stupid, but most of them are. I mean, to want to work at a company like that, you have to have a certain amount of density, or a real need for the crappy job.

I'll tell you thought, the clerks aren't nearly as stupid as the customers....

I gotta say that whenever a video clerk comments on what I am renting, it usually infuriates me.

She probably saw it and realized how mediocre and boring it was. Also how it had a minimal amount of suspense and everything followed its expected course with no truly surprising events...
