When did Craig stop caring?
He has mention at times that he stopped caring for the show in 2012 but still signed a 2 year contract anyway, and at other times he said hasnt cared since 2008. Does anyone know which year it was...

shareI don't know, but I do recall him one night around 2008 telling The Smothers Brothers that he wanted out. Maybe he was having problems with CBS, or maybe this was just his running joke, but it sounded like he was serious. I think he's a nice guy, but kind of hard to read sometimes.
shareIt's not that he didn't care. Like anyone who does the same job for several years, you get tired of it. But unlike other hosts, Craig had the courage to say "I don't wanna do this anymore" and chose to leave.
shareNO he didn't. He should have did that in 2012 when he signed that 2 year contract for $6 million per year rather than give us 2 years of terrible shows. Not take the money and half ass it for 2 years which is what he did. What he should have done if he wanted to sign for another 2 years was at least try and put 100% into the shows like he used to.
shareI think he signed the contract out of loyalty to Letterman and to CBS, not out of desire to stay. Basically Letterman released him of this duty by announcing his retirement earlier this year.
shareYou might think the past 2 years were terrible shows, but they still managed to make me laugh every night, and to me that's the most important thing.
shareHe's says that to poke fun at the considered opinion.
I think that was a joke. He said 2011 in one episode also.
As someone else said, I don't think it's that he "didn't care" as much as he was burned out on the same format. Craig is the type of guy who likes to do different things. Maybe he felt constricted by the show? Now he'll have time to do stand up, guest star, do his game show, maybe write another book (maybe, hopefully).

This is based on nothing but a gut feeling watching the show over the years, but I think Craig had plans for that show that were constantly squashed by the network. He wasn't given a budget or this and that and just kind of relegated to being small potatoes. So he just said screw it. I believe he knew the Dave was going to retire soon and decided to stick it out for a few more years just to make a tidy transition of things.
"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"
Craig's final words should have been as he's said before, "See Ya in Hell, Amigos!"
