Big eyes is just an artists' stylistic choice

This doesn't mean that this and all future Anime/Manga adaptations into movies should follow the Alita route! It looks unsettling, for one thing.

Yeah, what's up with her eyes? Is this based on a comic book where the character was drawn that way? It looks weird.

Big eyes are massively common in Japanese Manga and Anime, as you can see for yourself here in these numerous examples:

It's fine when drawn, I think, but rendered in realistic CGI, it just looks unnatural (see Uncanny Valley).

That's how I feel. That actress is beautiful, but the eyes make her look creepy.

except in the manga, comic books everyone has big eyes, so that at least it makes sense there.

It's to appeal to the Disney Princess, snapchat filter crowd. Let's see how this one pans out.
