Marc Platt clip

Can anyone identify the title of the movie, excerpted in "Ballets Russes," in which Marc Platt stages a dazzling audition of several dance genres? (Not "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" -- the other clip.)

reply

I figure you can infer it from the listing of films he's been in on the IMDb. Only a couple have a theatrical plot line.

The official Web site isn't all that helpful.

Hi--I''m pretty sure it's "Tonight and Every Night", which starred Rita Hayworth and (of all people) Sheley Winters.

reply

Yep. "Tonight and Every Night." A user comment which talks about "Marc Platt's dance solo in the beginning of the film set to flipping radio stations" sure makes it sound like the right one.

FYI, I purchased a copy of the film several years ago after I met Platt while doing an interview and, except for him, is unfortunately not worth watching.

Hi, I am Marc Platt's niece (by marriage). I am going to ask my cousin, Donna Platt, to reply to your message, I'm sure she will know. OR, she can ask her dad! He is still hale and hearty at age 90+ ! He always took extraordinary care of himself - as most dancers do. He married my Aunt Jean (Goodall) who was a dancer as well - our family calls her "our movie star" as she was in a few movies, too. She was one of the "Toast of the Town" or "Toastette" dancers on the Ed Sulivan show. I remember when Marc was choreographer of the Radio City Music ballet and we used to go in the side door and he would let us watch the ballet dancers "warming up." I think it always irked him that, as kids, we used to say that we liked the Rockettes better! :) I will ask Donna to confirm the clip you are referring to. Take care. Patti Goodall

The name of the movie is Tonight and Every Night with Rita Hayworth. It is really a great dance number. I'm not prejudiced or anything - - he is my father! :) I'm glad you enjoyed Ballet Russes; it is stunning isn't it!! Thanks, Donna Platt

I was completely amazed and uplifed by the film, and also really wowed by that clip. We've got to get Tonight and Every Night on DVD!

reply

Unfortunately, it's not on DVD, although Down To Earth, also with Rita Hayworth is. It's got a fair amount of dancing in it (Rita is wonderful), but doesn't offer Marc the same kind of solo that Tonight and Every Night did. I managed to get Tonight and Every Night on VHS via Ebay.

Dear Donna Jean:

I thought it was strange that there was no mention of your father being the original " Dream Curly" in the original cast of "Oklahoma ! " (Stage version). It was kind of sad that he was in the film version, but not in much of a dancing role. I would have thought " Dream Curly" was one of his most famous roles, except maybe for whichever of the Seven Brothers.

I had the same question. What is Mr. Platt's role in the film Oklahoma? He's listed as a dancer, but I haven't been able to spot him. Marvelous dancer. Truly enjoyed the dance & history of the Ballet Russes.

Hello Donna:

Please check your email for a request for info from your dad.

Thanks,
Ed

Amazing - this is the very question that I came on imdb tonight to ask. I saw Ballets Russe in the cinema 18 months ago and have just tonight watched it on DVD - and again it moved and uplifted me beyond words. I was enchanted by that clip of Marc Platt and can I add my praise to the other posters? THAT's a dancer who should be a household name - easily outshining Gene Kelly. What a dancer, what a performer, what a personality.

Hi! Yes, it really is Tonight and Every Night. The only bummer is that they edited out the amazing part of that dance sequence where he dances to a speech by Hitler. The lady at the radio is flipping channels and blips past Hitler's bombastic speech. Platt asks her to go back - he often dances to that guy, sez he - and then proceeds to do something I've never seen anyone else do: He picks up the rhythm of Hitler's speech patterns and the sycophantic "heils" from the minions, then does this very crisp, very physical military dance in time with it. It'll make your jaw drop.

It always makes me want to see more of him, but very few of his films are available.
