A family go to see a talent agent. The father announces that his family has put together a new vaudeville act and they'd like the agent to represent them. The talent agent says "Let me see your act then".
[At this point the joke teller ad libs the most disgusting and outrageous acts he can think of for the family to do].
The talent agent it is stunned. "What the heck do you call that?" he says, and the father replies "The Aristocrats!"
See I don't find that funny at all :/ maybe I don't find the lewdness or extremity funny.
how is this funny?! Is it a case of you either find it funny or not?
If I understand correctly I think that's the point. The punchline is purposely anti-climatic because people expect an amazing punch line to follow all that vulgarity...but you're not giving it to them. It's all a "joke".
shareI think the closest thing to an actual joke in the punchline is that since they're called aristocrats, they're supposed to be "classy." (Very American sentiment.) But of course it's just an excuse for the ad-libbing in the setup. In many ways it's not even a joke so much as a ritual among comedians.
I'll bet you could suck a golf ball through a garden hose.
it is not anti-climactic, it is ironic
shareThe thing about the joke is not the joke itself but how the comedian tells the joke and how they add their own flair.
shareThe joke is getting people to essentially stand there and listen to the most offensive, vile, disgusting scenario imagined all because they're waiting for a punch line. It's not like they enjoy what they're hearing yet they still stand there and wait for a punch line. It's a commentary on comedy itself, how waiting for a punchline essentially creates a self captive audience, how you can control people through their expectations. And then you purposely don't deliver on that expectation.
That's the joke.
