Movies of 2010 Bracket Game

https://lebeauleblog.com/2020/04/27/movies-of-2010-bracket-game/

Hey Millennials! If you have been feeling excluded by the 20th-century focus of our annual bracket games, I have good news for you. Our fifth and final retrospective of the year looks back at the relatively recent movies of 2010. That was just a decade ago, but oh how different things seemed then. The biggest movies at the box office were Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland and a post-Avatar 3-D craze was sweeping across cineplexes (which were still open!)

Which movie from ten years ago will readers pick as their favorite? There’s only one way to find out!

Full confession, I wasn’t 100% sold on the idea of a Movies of 2010 bracket game. I have been going back and forth for months over whether or not it should be done. If I was going to do it, were there enough memorable movies to support a full game or should I cut it down to half size like I did the movies of 1970?

Ultimately, I decided to go ahead and feature a full slate of 32 movies even if that meant including some that aren’t very well remembered today. I feel like this list does a pretty good job of capturing a moment in time. Although Disney had the top two movies at the box office that year, they were not yet as dominant as they were today. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was still in its infancy and not yet under the Mouse’s ownership.

Animation was huge in 2010. Toy Story 3 completed what was then thought to be a trilogy. Tangled was a bit of a comeback for Disney animation after the disappointing performance of The Princess and the Frog. Dreamworks finally ended the Shrek series (if not the franchise) with the fourth installment. And the long running Despicable Me and How to Train Your Dragon series began.

Half of the top ten grossing movies of the year were animated and that’s not even counting CGI-heavy hybrids like Alice in Wonderland.

The Best Picture at the Oscars went to… The King’s Speech? Colin Firth won Best Actor and Natalie Portman took home the Best Actress statue for Black Swan. The Social Network, which is arguably the best-remembered movie of the year, had to settle for Best Adapted Screenplay as well as Original Score and Editing. Inception took home some technical awards.

Was 2010 a great year for movies? No. But I think everyone will be able to find a few movies to root for. As always, voting ends Friday at 12:00 EST. Come back next week for the second round! And stay safe!
