yet he didn't think that one day that he would have wanted to pass it down to his kids? He was such a part of the family.

Erm it's only a theory that Andy's dad gave him Woody. Nothing has been confirmed.

And I think Andy letting Woody go was him letting go of his childhood and they both move on
