I thought that two minute limit was relatively cast in stone. How is it that he was able to redo hours in the past given that limit?

If you payed attention he mentions for some unknown reason he can see into the character of Jessica Biel's future for much longer than 2 minutes.

Everything we saw in the film after Nic went to bed with Jessica Biel was a vision of future events, it had not actually happened. It was a version of events that would happen if he tried to avoid helping the FBI. Thus the only way he can avoid it is to volunteer upfront to try and change events
This begs the question, he clearly cannot be watching his visions in real-time, as that long vision covers several hours possibly a couple of days, yet the scene in the freighter when he visualises exploring the ship for booby traps, he is standing still for the duration of the vision. The FBI team catches up to him as he snaps out of the vision.

In his "short visions within the long vision" he seems to pause though. Do everyone else move during the pause, or is it just an effect?
I think all of his visions, no matter how long, probably can last as little as seconds. He can experience a vision of events that last days, all in the span of a split second. I think the way he woke up at the end of the film, proves this.

In our conciousness time is very flexible and as such, he could very well have lived the 6 hours in the film in a 20 minute vision or less.
Also as can be seen when he's making his getaway from the casino, as well as him dodging multiple bullets. The perception of his visions, or the perception of the future, is done in far far less than half a second.
So we are talking a ratio of perception of his visions to realtime in the thousands. 1 second of a vision can be 1000 seconds in the real world.
Cage pausing was probably due to the film limitations and also the limitations of his friends (they are only so comfortable walking at a certain speed armed). He also 'froze' in those moments because he had experienced a vision of being exploded or shot. It has a psychic toll on him which he needs to consciously process in the real world. This is less the case if the shot is non fatal or he is sufficiently motivated. (End scene where he dodges 10 bullets in seconds)
Also I think the fact he can see so far ahead into Biels future is romantic. Just shows how much he cares for her. I say this cause there is a strong case that Cages ability is on certain level unconscious, basically whenever something concerning his future is about to happen, he sees it. This could be as little as someone talking about him, he can see the future of those actions.

People call the scene where FBI has Biel wait for over 2 minutes to put the drug in his drink as the biggest goof - I think THIS scene is maybe one of the only true goofs in this movie. Why, when he can explore EVERYWHERE, does he have the FBI team do ANYTHING AT ALL? "I'll explore all the other decks" could just as easily be "I'll explore all the decks."
I think this was Hollywood inserting a *beep* useless dying of a somewhat prevalent character (Moore's right hand man), one of the biggest cliches in action movies. Hell, he says early on "no, do this so you won't die" and suddenly in that scene he doesn't give a *beep* if the FBI team walks into danger? It's really stupid.

the commentary on the DVD makes it clear she was his catalyst to enhancing his power beyond the 2 min
