I don't like the feeling of being fooled

Most part of this movie is a prediction, or more exactly, an illusion. When the hero woke up from his prediction with the girl in his arms on the bed, I was startled. Maybe the producer felt complacent by guiding viewers this way. But I just felt fooled and I don't like this feeling.

We are all globe villagers.

I'm with you on that one. I loved the first 30 minutes or so, and I was willing to let the movie go, despite it's little flaws. It felt like a fun action movie, and Nicolas Cage was just exellent. But then the end just sort of sweeps the floor from your feet. You were fooled. So all those cool action scenes didn't actually happen. That sucked. But I'm all for sequel.

There was a plot clue. Cage's Character said he could only see a few minutes ahead except when his new lady was involved. (or words to that effect).
That validates the deception, like the famous "I see dead people"... in Sixth Sense. A legitimate plot device as long as the clue is placed before the audience.

It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.

exept the action scenes did happen as you watched them and he predicted them. perception of reality is all subjective so since he saw them with his abilities they essentially still happened

I think the only way anyone would feel 'fooled' is if they expect everything to be played out on screen and nothing to be left to the imagination. Once he'd spent the night working his way through all of the possible outcomes, all he had to do, as someone said, was walk out of the cabin and tell the Feds that the bomb was in the dockyard. It's watching all of the scenarios with the negative endings playing out that makes the movie entertaining.

reply

Yeps, i also agree with you. When the movie ended i just feelt fooled. If i had the same ability the horo had i wouldent have watched the last two minutes.

reply

What you should have said was that you don't like feeling gullible, because the filmmakers dabbled with the alternate events throughout the movie prior to the revelation at the end.

reply

Oh, quit yer yappin' and wait for Next 2: The Second Half of the First Movie like the rest of us. Actually, it won't be the second half of the story, it'll be more like the next quarter, because Next 2 will also be half bogus, as will Next 3 and 4 and so on. Each film will add smaller and smaller fractions of the story, until we get to Next 33 & 1/3: The Final Insult, where it's revealed that Nic Cage never actually left the diner. He's still in there, trying to hit on Jessica Biel.

reply

Maybe I'm alone but I thought the ending was cool, a definate Wow.

reply

I agree. I would have probably forgotten about this movie if it weren't for the end.

Fooled ?

Well what we all saw is the actual event that would be happening if he don't get up out of the bed that time and put up some clothes.

this clever twist lifted it from a 6 to an 8 for me

reply

I didn't go remotely that high, but the ending lifted my score also. The key structure failing of most of these SF/time/fantasy movies is forgetting the Big premise and punching/shooting it out at the end. Getting back to the basics and resetting due to the barely mentioned further-ahead-with-girlfriend thing is nice.

I don't need everything wrapped up, so liked that also.

reply

I liked the ending. It would have been funny if at the very end he woke up it turned out that he was actually 3 and his whole life was actually just a vision.

Most movies have twists in plots. It was made clear that Cris could see up to weeks ahead when it involved Callie so I thought it was expected more than being fooled.

I just finished watching a thriller and the movie pointed all evidence to one man being the killer up until the end when the real killer was unmasked. Movies do it a lot . . . a battle is almost lost, a man and woman hate each other unti the end of the movie when they realize they've fallen in love with one another, etc, etc.

I like it.
