Wouldn't it make sense to go in heavy on shotguns and carbines, maybe one battle rifle (say an M14 or SKS)? They had what seemed nothing but bullet hoses that they used poorly.
Did they have a military advisor? Seriously, do down to the VFW and scrounge up an ex-gun bunnie, he might even do it for free.
Uh, did you not notice that whenever they fired their weapons, they were firing single shots. They were using their weapons well against the zombies (single, well-aimed shots that didn't miss). Besides, having automatic fire would be a real big help if they started to get overwhelmed (multiple shots push the zombies back and help clear a path.)
