I really hate both of the HOTD films but I really love zombie movies. My favorites to date are the remake of Dawn of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead, as well as, of course the original Night of the Living Dead. Are there any out there as good or better than these???
well, here's some zombie movies which I think are far more better than HOTD :
*Day of the Dead *Resident Evil 1&2 *28 Days Later-(this is really good) *Brain Dead --(very old movie and kinda funny) *Evil Dead 1&2 *Land of the Dead *Pet Sematary
I've been a zombie movie fan since I was young (15-20 years ago)
(no particular order)
1) Night of the Living Dead (1990 Remake) By far, my favorite "traditional" zombie movie. While I like the original, this remake still holds true to the 1st and improves upon the story. This is *THE* Zombie Movie.
2) Dawn of the Dead (Original) Great flick. Really puts the raises the "zombies have taken over" ante. Very plausible and interesting to watch. One of the best out there.
3) Day of the Dead The weakest out of the original trilogy. The story is interesting enough and a logical extension of the other movies, but the acting and pacing isn't that great. Though, it is the goriest and most shocking of the three. The zombies and attacks are grusome.
4) Dawn of the Dead (Remake) Wasn't that bad, but a little too "Hollywood" and had some logic flaws. Also, zombies *don't* run.
5) Shaun of the Dead An instant zombie classic. While it is hilarious and satires the zombie genre, it still holds it's own as a real zombie movie. Additionally, it stays true to the traditional zombie prototype. (they're not smarter, faster, stronger, etc.)
6) Resident Evil 1 & 2 Both of these are "okay", but not real zombie movies. I'd go into it, but they're not worth it.
7) 28 Days Later While I really enjoyed this film, in my eyes it isn't a real zombie movie. The "zombies" are more like rabies infested crazy humans. Still a scary movie with a great ending, but not a *real* zombie movie.
8) Evil Dead 1 & 2 Great movies. Both of them. 1 is horror. 2 is horror/comedy. Though neither really are zombie movies. Still worth watching though.
9) Land of the Dead One of the better current zombie movies, but not *great*. Interesting story, characters and events, but this "official" continuation of the original trilogy does quite hold up. Still fun to watch though.
10) Pet Sematary One hell of a scary movie, but not really a "zombie" movie. Definitely worth watching though.
11) Zombi series Whatever you do, avoid this series of zombie movies like the plague. All are Italian made if I remember right. The budgets were low and the acting and dubbing are horrible. A couple of them heavily borrow footage from other films and piece them together. Can be "okay" to make fun of for the "camp factor". Most are pretty damn gory if I remember right.
12) Waxwork (1988) Not a zombie movie, but a pretty entertaining 80s flick. There are several zombie scenes though that pay tribute to "Night of the Living Dead". They are pretty entertaining. I can't remember if they are scary as I haven't seen the movie in years.
13) The Return of the Living Dead (and sequels) These were fun movies to watch when I was younger. 80s cult classic to most. I'm not sure how they hold up today as I haven't watched them in years.
"The Zombie Survival Guide" - Great guide telling your what to do in case a zombie outbreak occurs. A great read and you may never know... you might need it.
"World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War" - I'm reading this now. It's a fictional account of what humans did when the zombies started taking over. Interestingly enough, Brad Pitt bought the rights to the book and it's going to be made into a movie.
1.shaun of the dead- great movie in all areas of the film shows us brit can make another decent zombie flick look down at number 4 2.dawn of the dead - the original is a timeless classic remake werent bad either considering 3.evil dead-scary as kid grown up you laugh at it but it is a film that is so high up in the 10 best horror films bruce campbell is my god and i follow his religion 4.8 days later-show us brits can make a decent film freaky great horror zombie flick. 5.chopper chicks in zombie town- lol hot birds and zombies 6.braindead-genius film from peter jackson old but still stands good comedy
Braindead (It's just great, plain and simple) Detained (Very scary shortmovie) Dawn of the dead (both of em) Shaun of the dead (Just can't get enough of it) Zombie Flesheaters (Love the music) Dead Meat (Irish masterpiece) Stink of flesh (It isn't great, but it's very entertaining and gory.)
There are probably more zombieflicks i love out there, i just can't remember them right now.
3. Tom Savini's Night Of The Living Dead Remake. For some reason I prefer it to the original.
4. Brain Dead.
5. Re-Animator.
6. Return Of The Living Dead Part 2.
7. Dawn Of The Dead Original.
8. Night Of The Living Dead Original.
9. Bride Of Re-Animator.
10. Day Of The Dead.
This is just my personal list in terms of enjoyment, obviously the original Night Of The Living Dead kickstarted all, so huge kudos go to George of course.
There are some zombie flicks you might like from the Far East:
1) Bio-Zombie: A fun tongue-in-cheek zombie movie set in a Hong Kong mall. Think "Mall Rats" meets "Dawn of the Dead". A great movie to watch with a lot of people. Watch for the hilarious scene where Chinese agents buy Iraqi bio-weapons, dubbed "the best in the world".
2)Junk: A Japanese zombie flick where jewel thiefs face off against government created zombies in an abandoned military base. Think "Reservoir Dogs" meets "Resident Evil". A fun flick with a really naked female zombie who might be the movie's equivalent to Resident Evil's Tyrant.
3)Stacy: Not my favorite zombie flick by far, but it's interesting. This Japanese flick shows us a future where all girls turn into zombies around the time they turn 16. Think "Children of Men" meets "Day of the Dead". Nice nods to the Evil Dead series here, namely threw the chainsaw named the Super Ash 9000.
Just a quick comment on number three, "Stacy". By your description, the basic premise sounds like a pastiche (or rip-off) of a horror novel I read last year titled "Xombies".
More recent: Shaun of the Dead or the Dawn of the Dead remake Past: The Romero Films or The Return of the Living Dead Series (minus the two that went straight to the Sci-Fi channel...was it last year or the year before?)
Oh my Lord, No one has mentioned Versus! It's a ridiculously fun, action-oriented, semi-spoof on the zombie genre. Not 100% a zombie film, but definitely worth seeing at least once.
Undead is also worth a watch, but not great (Australian film).
"What's the big idea? This is a LEFT hand!" - Versus
I love Day of the Dead, its my favorite of the Romero trilogy, and probably my favorite straight up zombie movie of all.
As for less 'traditional' zombie movies (ie. the creatures can't technically be considered zombies but are still pretty close), Evil Dead 1 and 2 are at the top of my list, followed by 28 Days Later and most recently Planet Terror, which is Robert Rodriguez's half of 'Grindhouse'.
I think you're all forgetting "Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue", it's also called "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie". Not only is is very well shot, well edited and well acted but it's also creepy, gory and has a message. It's very well structured and tightly made - everything from the opening credits scene onwards is used to either further the story or provide commentary. It's one of the few Zombie movies that can be analysed under normal movie making criteria as opposed to being simply a piece of exploitation.
1. Shaun of the Dead It was really funny and clever and just an overall entertaining movie.
2. Dawn of the Dead (2004) I really enjoyed this movie because the zombies were able to run. It made them that much scarier. Some people will argue that they are decomposing and braindead so it doesn't make sense for them to run, but it doesn't make much sense for them to be walking around eating people either, does it?
3. 28 Days Later I really liked this interesting take on the whole genre. It was really entertaining and I can't wait for 28 Weeks Later.
To tell the truth, I'd have to say that for sheer enjoyment factor, House of the Dead 2 tops a lot of the Romero flicks. For terror, no way. However, the fact is that the scene with the zombie librarian had me laughing my a$$ off for ten minutes. Maybe it's just my sense of humour...
1. Hide and Creep. Beautiful movie. It definitely beats out Shaun of the Dead. That movie just... isn't that funny. Especially compared to this one. Watch it and see what I mean.
2. Any of the Romero flicks. For sheer horror, that man is a genius.
3. I'd have to say House of the Dead 2. Again, probably just for my sense of humour.
That's about it. Shaun of the Dead, though lauded greatly, really isn't that great. I found it offensive and a waste of time. I haven't seen most of the rest, so I can't comment on those. Although, admittedly, the whole 'running zombie' thing in Dawn of the Dead was annoying. Rigor Mortis, anyone?
I think people read into the zombies too much. Rigormortis can't be a factor because they wouldn't be able to move at all. In the end, they're all just movies so you can't look at what would be logical and just need to learn to like it for what it is.
Most of the zombie fans I've seen aren't fond of the running zombies because they grew up with Romero, but I'm a little younger so I am more open to new things.
Assuming mild temperatures, rigor usually sets in about 3-4 hours after clinical death[citation needed], with full rigor being in effect at about 12 hours, and eventually subsiding to relaxation at about 36 hours. Times for the onset of rigor mortis can vary from a few minutes to several hours depending on the ambient temperature
I still don't like running zombies ala dotd remake, but 28 days later viral zombie makes for some good fun.
Planet Terror, 28 days later, 28 weeks later, Orginal Night of the living dead, the original dawn of the dead, Original Day of the dead, Shaun of the dead, Dead Alive, Zombi, Return of the living dead 5, City of the dead, Undead
The two top zombie movies are the original DAWN OF THE DEAD and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. DAWN tells the tale of a world gone made with material greed, believe it or not. RETURN is the most horrifying comedy ever made.
