Like the title suggests, The Giver is just a mash-up of a couple of other movies, primarily Divergent and Equilibrium. Also a bit of Pleasantville in there too. Not nearly as original as it probably thinks it is. It's just another future dystopia aimed at the teen market. Nice try Harvey Weinstein.

Not knocking the author of the book, but from a strictly movie point of view, the comparison holds true. Didn't see anything in The Giver that I hadn't seen on screen before, much of it fairly recently.
Obviously Hollywood is still trying to cash in on the whole teen future dystopian crazy, kicked off by the Hunger Games and Divergent. Without the current fad, it's unlikely The Giver would have even been made at this point. Just saying.

Divergent nor Equilibrium made me react emotionally like The Giver has. I enjoyed all three movies but see them differently.
