The Chief Elder and The Giver - Married?

In the scene where they are talking after Jonas' and Felicity's lunch tray ride, it goes like this:

The Elder- You're being careless; you're moving too fast, we both know what happened ten years ago to the girl...
- The girl had a name.
- You think I don't remember her name?
- I know you feel her loss.

Was some kind of exception made, and they were allowed to know they were Rosemary's parents? It sure seems like it to me.

Well, the movie didn't go very in depth into this, but the book describes that there are women that their entire "job" is to birth babies. The movie did show a girl being assigned this position in the assignment ceremony, so it would seem the movie's society functions the same way as the book's society. Since the chief elder's job was to be the chief elder, I would say she was not Rosemary's mother.

As far as the Giver goes, the movie mentions that all the kids in their society are genetically engineered. So nobody is really their true mother or father. Even their birth mothers are not genetically related to them.

So, basically, in the movie, people are genetically engineered, birthed by women assigned to give birth to them, and then raised by "family" units assigned to raise them. But nobody is truly anyone's mother or father. So the chief elder and the Giver can't be Rosemary's parents, at least not genetically. Apparently the Giver was assigned to raise her, so she was his daughter in that sense, but she was not genetically related to him.

In the book, the Giver did have a spouse, but she lived in the area for Childless Adults. It was never even hinted that his spouse was the Chief Elder.

As for the children, a man and woman are required. We know there were birth mothers (one is the main character in the fourth book, Son) but nothing is stated about the fathers or how they get the sperm from them.
