outside beyond the community

So is this all that is left of us. Or are there other human settlements living normal lives? Like us. I mean it also reminds me of The Village. But set in the future. But outside there gates does it mention I. The book if there are people that live outside of this community?

The Community that Jonas lives in is one of a number of connected communities that the Giver visits. Also, the students visit each other on field trips occasionally. Outside of that, in the other books, they showed at least two other communities as well as, in "The Messenger", people from many other communities who have been mistreated in their former communities.

Ok In the film. It looks like all the communities are on one platuo. When they pull the camera back it looks pretty huge. So do you mean there are platuo"s scattered all over the Earth like there's and how many generations has man been living like this? Because the log house at the bottom of the hill is in great shape. But I wonder what the rest of the planet looks like beyond there. I assume cities look post apocalypic?

The book has it that the people who built Jonas' Community flattened the area for miles around, or as far as they travel. The area outside that area is normal and has differences in elevation, including hills.

I don't know why they showed a plateau in the movie other than for dramatic effect. I viewed the book's community as more like sea level as they had waterways and fisheries in the community.

The second book "Gathering Blue" was far more of a post-apocalyptic kind of village where they lived mostly in earthen homes except for the elders who lived in a building that once housed a church as well as rooms that all had private bathrooms. Somehow, even without electricity or anything else that could be considered knowledge of plumbing, the water still came out of the taps and toilets. Even hot water was available.

"The Messenger" was just a community that welcomed everyone from all communities. It had no electricity. It seems as if the Community in "The Giver' was the most technologically advanced. the one thing that is similar in all of them is there are people with special abilities in all or many of the communities.

Ok Thank You Bob. Now I understand it better.

If you looked at that map, all of these communities were within that circle. Jonas had to cross that barrier to restore the memories. The map showed several mountain top communities, wherever Jonas lived was only one of many mountain communities in that world. Off the top of my head it showed at least 3 communities: A, B, and C.

actually they showed several plateaus. Just finished watching this.

I also wondered: is there any civilization outside of the "circle of memory"? The map seemed to show a couple of communities within the circle of memory, but how about outside? I mean, there surely could have been a few runaways living there (in that wooden house, for instance), but could there have been cities, countries, civilizations outside of the zone protected by the memory circle?

reply

Yes exactly. You worded thst much better than I did. Like in Logan's run. Everyone died at age 30 by going through the Carousel ritual. But yet outside there were people living outside on the surface. Like the old man they run into.

reply

Yes, it seems like there were others who had previously escaped. Or maybe there were some pockets of people who had never been in the communities in the first place?
