giver wrongly adressed as receiver

are my braincells reduced to a minimum after watching this piece, or is there an error in the script (about minute 38), where the "elder" talks to jonas' family about his relations to the giver, adressing the giver multiple times as "the receiver"?

reply

Jonas was the apprentice of sorts to the Receiver of Memories. Only when the training was finished (or rather the completion of giving the memories) would Jonas officially be called the Receiver of Memories.

I too found this a bit confusing, as Jonas had a previous discussion about him being the new receiver and the old man was now the giver. Terminology here is inconsistent.

reply

It was not inconsistent. You were just not paying close enough attention.

reply

Yes, you are confused.
Jeff Bridges was a Receiver.
When he called himself "the Giver" he was referring to role in training Jonas to be the next Receiver. It was not a formal title.

But as they said, there's only ever one Receiver.

reply

That's why Jonas is considered the "receiver in training"...

reply

Actually they didn't say that there is only ever one receiver. They said "there is only one." See the difference? Jonas replies to that statement and says something like "well now there are two."
