The house at the end.............. SPOILER

In the book, it was never stated who lived in the house. The third book in the series (The Messenger), a sequel to the Giver and the second book (Gathering Blue), had Jonas (never specifically named--he was known as Leader) as a young man with around eight years passing between the end of Giver and the start of Messenger. Nothing was ever stated about where he lived in between.

There were many communities in the general area. The one seen at the end of The Giver was one of the most benificent and open, taking in people who ran away from their communities. Gathering Blue takes place in a community seemingly somewhat closer to the Messenger community and is far less technically advanced with the people living in earthen huts. There were other communities referenced, but never shown.
