Nikolai Gogol
Is anyone familiar with the works of Gogol? How do they relate to this movie?
shareI'm not familiar with his work.
But as for the movie, one of the main characters is named after him.
My thoughts about this were that because Gogal was such a naturalist and humanist, he was meant to be a symbol that Ashoke was a down to earth and spiritual man with no pretensions who never succumbed to the materialismm of the USA and who wouldn't want his son to do the same and become one of the "Ugly Americans." Also, Gogol often criticized bureaucracy in his works, especially in "The Overcoat," and ironically Ashoke died of a a massive heart attack while he was waiting in a crowded emergency room to see a doctor.
