Moushumi's affair question - her affair too sudden?

I loved watching The Namesake, but I haven't read the book. One question...Moushumi's affair with the French guy (sorry I don't know his name) seemed to happen rather suddenly in the movie. Maybe the book had more of a backstory, or maybe some scenes were cut from the movie that happened to provide a backstory? Sure, maybe Moushumi's affair was inevitable but I wish there was more backstory about her path to the French guy.

Pierre. Yes, I agree, it just sort of happened

It's been a while since I've read the book, but I think her affair with the French guy was the resumption of an affair they had had when she was living in France. It wasn't a new relationship for her.

reply

You can say that. But I think it was a kind of obvious because she had already told him about her previous relationships.
However, I can't say that I saw it coming.

I saw the red flag when she stated to him that he doesn't want to know how many men she's had an affair with.

the moment she said "many affairs" I knew there was going to be cheating involved... it is not even a cliche, it is real life.

I was actually really shocked when they got married, that part shocked me more than the cheating

It went up the flagpole for me when she showed him the letter from the Sorbonne. It began her mind thinking of things French and her past lover from there (assuming he was with her during her time there) Pierre. What a slap in the face to Gogol. No wonder men these days are relationship shy. It just takes one singe like this to spoil them off. Sad for him but in my mind he's traveling and will meet his bliss.

Be well and be kind

reply

It wasn't all of a sudden. She had already been involved with Pierre before she and Gogol had "tea," the first time.

While I can see why people felt it was rushed, they kept showing us that they had no business being married

1. She clearly was not into the arranged marriage/hookup tradition.

2. They hook up based on lust more than love

3. When they are intimate, she tells him she had lovers and when he asked "how many" she responds "you don't want to know."

4. Then the conflicts: the fight over revealing his name to her friends

5. It was clear he didn't like her friends and they were from two different worlds

6. Turning down the job offer to teach and commenting that she will be a good housewife....That was it right there

7. Even when she took the case, it was obvious to his mother that she was cheating.
